Bill Simmons Would ‘Bet His Life’ the Warriors Poach LeBron James — Here’s Why That Feels Real

LeBron James hitting the open market this summer was always going to be chaotic. But a scenario where he leaves Los Angeles for Golden State? That would rewrite the NBA’s power structure in ways the league hasn’t seen since Kevin Durant chose the Warriors in 2016.

According to multiple reports, the Warriors are legitimately circling LeBron as a free-agent target. And Bill Simmons, the veteran podcaster and basketball analyst, isn’t just speculating — he’s going all in on the possibility.

“Before we get to Giannis, LeBron, what happens with that is a good one. This one is a really fun one because the Warriors is really in play now, like for real,” Simmons said on his show. “I really feel like if I had to bet my life on a team, I’d think I would bet on them … I think that would be the move for me.”

It’s a stunning claim, but there’s actual smoke behind it. ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel reported that the Warriors have been circling LeBron since 2020, and that pairing him with Stephen Curry has been a long-standing dream of Golden State owner Joe Lacob.

“That one outside team that we keep bringing up are the Golden State Warriors,” Siegel noted. “They have always lurked for LeBron pretty much since 2020 — he has been on Joe Lacob’s wishlist as being a player that they want to pair with Stephen Curry at the end of their respective careers.”

The Roster Reality Check

Here’s where it gets tricky. LeBron won’t come cheap, even at 41. To make the finances work, Golden State would almost certainly need to move significant salary. Jonathan Kuminga, Andrew Wiggins, or even Chris Paul’s expiring deal could be on the table. The team has not confirmed any active pursuit, but the speculation is loud enough that execs around the league are paying attention.

The upside is obvious: Curry and LeBron together in a motion offense that has already proven it can maximize an aging superstar. The Warriors’ system is famously adaptable — if you can shoot, cut, and think, you can thrive. LeBron, who has always been a playmaking genius, would be liberated from carrying a Lakers roster that lacked shooting and spacing.

But there’s a catch that might keep LeBron in purple and gold. The Lakers can offer him the most money, and they have the leverage of his Southern California lifestyle and business empire. Plus, LeBron has never been one to join a rival mid-career — unless you count the 2018 move to the Lakers themselves, which was more about legacy than competition.

Fans online noted the irony: LeBron joining the team he faced in three straight Finals would be the ultimate “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” moment. But it would also give him a legitimate shot at a fifth ring alongside arguably the best shooter in history.

For now, the Warriors remain a fascinating dark horse. Simmons is betting his life on it. Whether that bet pays off depends on how badly LeBron wants to chase another title — and whether Golden State can clear the cap space to make it happen.
