4-Star CB Deontay Malone Picks Ohio State Over Michigan, Auburn — and the Timing Tells a Bigger Story

Ohio State’s 2027 recruiting class just got a major boost — and it came from a player who might be the most versatile athlete in the Buckeyes’ entire pipeline.

Deontay Malone, a four-star cornerback from Massillon Washington, announced his commitment Sunday after wrapping up an official visit to Columbus. The 6-foot, 182-pound defensive back chose Ohio State over a lengthy list of Power Conference suitors, including Michigan State, Michigan, Auburn, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Maryland, North Carolina, Boston College and West Virginia.

But what makes this commitment stand out isn’t just the star rating — it’s the timing. Malone is the first cornerback to pledge to the Buckeyes in the 2027 cycle, and he’s doing it before the end of his junior season. That matters because Ohio State’s secondary has been a point of emphasis for head coach Ryan Day and defensive coordinator Tim Walton, who personally served as Malone’s lead recruiter and identified him as one of the top prospects in the state early on.

“He’s a difference-maker on both sides of the ball, and we believe his best football is ahead of him,” a source close to the program told the website, though the team has not confirmed any direct quotes from the staff.

Malone’s production backs up the hype. During his junior season, he recorded 25 tackles and three interceptions on defense while also hauling in 34 receptions for 498 yards and nine touchdowns as a wide receiver. He added value as both a kick and punt returner and has been clocked at 4.43 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Ohio State’s coaching staff believes his athleticism and physicality will allow him to play either outside or inside corner at the collegiate level.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Malone is ranked No. 284 overall in the nation, the No. 33 cornerback, and the No. 11 prospect in Ohio. Rivals places him at No. 265 in its 2027 Rivals300. Those numbers alone don’t tell the full story — what matters more is the buzz around his ceiling.

Malone becomes the 14th commitment for Ohio State’s 2027 class, which already features five-star edge rusher David Jacobs, four-star edge Wyatt Smith, and linebackers Quinton Cypher and Prince Goldsby. He’s also the fifth in-state recruit to join the group and the third defensive back overall, alongside four-star safety Eli Johnson and three-star athlete Angelo Smith.

For a program that has consistently reloaded rather than rebuilt, landing a player of Malone’s caliber this early in the cycle sends a message: Ohio State’s recruiting machine isn’t slowing down, and the Buckeyes are betting big on in-state talent to anchor their future secondary.

Malone’s next challenge? Showing he can translate that two-way production into a full-time role at the next level. Given his track record, it’s a bet the Buckeyes are happy to make.
