The confetti had barely settled inside Madison Square Garden. Jalen Brunson had just dropped 45 points in a 94-90 Game 5 win over the San Antonio Spurs, clinching the Knicks’ first NBA championship since 1973. But when the cameras turned to him, the conversation wasn’t about the shot-making or the historic drought broken. It was about what he wasn’t looking at during the run: his phone.
Brunson revealed to ESPN’s “Inside the NBA” crew that his playoff transformation began when New York fell behind 2-1 to the Atlanta Hawks in the first round. That’s when he says he “shut down social media” entirely.
“Honestly, after that, as when I shut down social media, I shut down in between series, I would post something like post one or two things, like maybe like it was like a shoe or whatever, but I would then get rid of it,” Brunson said.
The timing is hard to ignore. After that Game 3 loss to Atlanta, the Knicks lost only once more the rest of the postseason — a Game 3 defeat in the Finals. They went on to sweep the Philadelphia 76ers and the Cleveland Cavaliers before taking down the Spurs in five.
The approach draws an unmistakable parallel to LeBron James’ famed “Zero Dark Thirty-23” method, where the four-time MVP would completely disconnect from his phone and social media during the playoffs. Brunson didn’t claim the comparison, but the results speak loudly enough.
For Brunson, the digital detox wasn’t particularly difficult. He credited his teammates for keeping him grounded and focused on the task at hand. The 28-year-old guard averaged over 30 points per game in the Finals and shot 14-of-27 from the floor in the clincher, including 4-of-7 from deep. He added three rebounds, three assists, and two steals in the title-winning performance.
The Knicks have not confirmed any plans for a longer-term social media policy, but Brunson’s admission adds a layer of myth-making to a postseason that already felt scripted. After 53 years without a championship, New York finally has its moment — and its star guard made sure nothing outside the locker room could interrupt it.
