The Philadelphia Phillies thought they had a clear path to fixing their outfield. Then the Chicago Cubs threw a wrench in the plan.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Phillies are “desperately looking to acquire an outfielder” after right fielder Adolis García suffered a torn latissimus dorsi muscle — an injury that could end his season. Two names surfaced as potential targets: Los Angeles Angels outfielder Jo Adell and Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki. But Suzuki’s own health has suddenly become a question mark.
During Saturday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, Suzuki exited after experiencing right knee discomfort while trying to field a line drive. Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters, including Jordan Bastian of MLB News, that initial reports were positive. “But the most important thing is how is he going to feel tomorrow,” Counsell said. “I don’t have postgame news on him. It’s how he feels tomorrow.”
That uncertainty matters for Philadelphia. Suzuki is hitting .255 with 10 home runs, 28 RBIs, and a .772 OPS in 208 at-bats this season. Those numbers aren’t elite, but they’re solid for a team that just lost a starting outfielder — and they come with the kind of disciplined at-bats the Phillies covet. Add in his earlier absence this season due to a minor posterior cruciate ligament sprain suffered while playing for Team Japan in the World Baseball Classic, and the risks start piling up.
The other option, Jo Adell, offers pop but less consistency. Adell is batting .249 with 10 home runs, 39 RBIs, and a .685 OPS in 277 at-bats for the Angels. His raw power is intriguing, but his on-base numbers and strikeout rate raise questions about whether he can handle a playoff-level pitching staff.
Adolis García’s timeline makes this urgent. He left the Phillies’ series finale in Toronto on June 10 and was placed on the 60-day injured list two days later with a torn right latissimus dorsi muscle. Interim manager Don Mattingly didn’t sugarcoat the prognosis on Friday, as reported by Paul Casella of MLB News: “I mean, it sounds like that’s a good possibility,” Mattingly said when asked if the injury could be season-ending. “I know they’re waiting on one final opinion, but it obviously is not good. Put him on the (60-day IL) right away. Yeah, it doesn’t look good.”
Philadelphia’s front office is now weighing two imperfect trade targets — one unproven, one with a balky knee. With the trade deadline approaching and an outfield hole to fill, the Phillies may have to move fast. But whether Suzuki is healthy enough to help them is a question only tomorrow will answer.
