The Atlanta Braves are once again facing life without their star pitcher. Spencer Strider has been placed on the injured list due to right elbow inflammation, the team announced Friday, after the right-hander exited an outing against the New York Mets with arm soreness. It’s the latest setback for a pitcher who has battled injuries over the past few seasons.
Manager Walt Weiss addressed the move, but did not offer a timeline for Strider’s return. “I don’t have any further updates beyond what’s already been shared,” Weiss said, according to reporter Chad Bishop. “He’s dealing with elbow inflammation. We’ll just take it day by day.”
What Weiss did confirm is a corresponding change to the rotation. Right-hander JR Ritchie is being inserted into the spot vacated by Strider. “We’ll just insert Ritchie into that spot,” Weiss said.
Ritchie has been solid in a swing role this season, posting a 3.82 ERA over six appearances with 26 strikeouts and a 1-1 record. But the move underscores the uncertainty surrounding Atlanta’s pitching depth as the season pushes into the summer months.
Strider’s Struggles Continue
For Strider, this injury adds another chapter to what has been a frustrating year. Through eight starts, he carries a 5.31 ERA with 46 strikeouts and a 4-2 record — far below the elite form that made him one of baseball’s most electric arms. His velocity and command have been inconsistent, and the elbow issue now raises questions about whether he can regain his top-tier form.
Weiss acknowledged the emotional toll on Strider. “He’s been through a lot the past few years trying to work his way back,” the manager said. “We’ve seen glimpses. He had that outing in L.A. where he was lights out — he looked just like the old Spencer. There was a lot of hope.”
Teammates Rally Around the Ace
Ritchie, who has leaned on Strider as a mentor, expressed disappointment for his teammate. “It’s terrible because Spencer’s a really great guy, a great teammate,” Ritchie said. “He’s been a huge mentor to me. I hate to see him go down. He’s a really big part of this team and this organization.”
The Braves have not yet set a date for Strider’s next evaluation, and the team is expected to be cautious with his recovery. When — or if — Strider returns to his dominant form remains the central question hanging over Atlanta’s rotation.
