Jack Flaherty Hits IL With Leg Injury Just as Tigers Get Skubal Back

The Detroit Tigers got their ace back on Saturday, but the celebration came with a costly twist: veteran starter Jack Flaherty is headed to the injured list with a left peroneal strain, sidelining him for at least 15 days.

The move came just before Detroit’s road game against the Cleveland Guardians, creating a mixed bag of roster news for a team trying to stabilize its rotation in the middle of the season.

What the Tigers Announced

The team’s official public relations account confirmed the transactions on social media. Tarik Skubal was activated from the 15-day injured list, while Flaherty was placed on the IL with the lower leg strain. To fill out the roster, infielder Hao-Yu Lee was recalled from Triple-A Toledo, and right-hander Ty Madden was optioned back to the same affiliate.

The specific diagnosis — a left peroneal strain — suggests a tendon issue along the outside of Flaherty’s lower leg. The Tigers have not disclosed a clear timeline beyond the mandatory 15-day IL stint, but peroneal strains can sometimes linger if not managed carefully.

The Bigger Picture

Flaherty came to Detroit with something to prove after bouncing through multiple organizations. He had settled into a reliable mid-rotation role, giving the Tigers innings and stability. His absence now leaves a hole in the rotation — especially with Skubal returning from his own injury layoff.

Skubal has been the Tigers’ most dominant pitcher when healthy. The left-hander returned to action against the Guardians, giving Detroit a legitimate No. 1 arm. But the team is clearly trying to balance short-term competitiveness with long-term health, which is why they’ve been cycling through depth pieces like Madden and Lee.

What’s Next

The Tigers are walking a tightrope. Skubal’s return bolsters the top of the rotation, but Flaherty’s injury means the middle innings will rely on younger arms or bullpen games. Fans online noted the unfortunate timing, with one posting: “Finally get Skubal back, and Flaherty goes down. Just can’t have nice things.”

The team has not said whether a corresponding move is expected in the coming days, but Lee’s promotion gives the infield more flexibility. Madden will continue developing in Toledo, likely first in line if another starter is needed.

For now, Detroit’s rotation depth is being tested — again. And the margin for error in a competitive AL Central is razor thin.
