Why Sending Down a Rookie for Tarik Skubal Exposes a Bigger Concern for Detroit

The Detroit Tigers are getting their ace back. But the roster move that made room for Tarik Skubal also put a spotlight on a more immediate problem: the health of Jack Flaherty.

Skubal, who missed time after surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow, is set to take the mound Saturday against the Cleveland Guardians. To clear a spot on the active roster, the Tigers optioned rookie right-hander Ty Madden to Triple-A, according to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic.

The decision itself is standard roster management. What makes it notable is the context: Flaherty exited Friday’s game with an apparent injury, and the team is still waiting on medical evaluations. If Flaherty lands on the injured list, infielder Hao-Yu Lee is with the big league club as a potential replacement.

“They are in wait-and-see mode on Jack Flaherty, who is still getting evaluation from doctors,” Stavenhagen wrote on X. “Hao-Yu Lee is here in the event Flaherty goes on the IL.”

This isn’t just a footnote. Flaherty has been a vital piece of Detroit’s rotation, and any extended absence would test an already depleted pitching staff. The Tigers have weathered injuries all spring, and Skubal’s return is a major boost—but it doesn’t erase the uncertainty surrounding Flaherty.

Skubal’s Return: What to Expect

Skubal looked sharp in his lone rehab start last Sunday, throwing strikes and commanding the zone. The two-time AL Cy Young winner posted a 2.70 ERA with 45 strikeouts in seven starts before his surgery, and manager A.J. Hinch didn’t mince words about what his return means.

“We’re adding the best pitcher in baseball back to our mix,” Hinch told ESPN. “It’s hard to describe what that boost will be.”

Skubal himself sounded confident after the rehab outing. “I feel like I threw a ton of strikes. I was in the zone a lot today,” he said Sunday.

The Tigers will need that command against a Guardians lineup that’s been aggressive early in counts. Saturday’s start will be Skubal’s first taste of regular-season action since the procedure, and all eyes will be on his velocity and pitch execution.

The Bigger Picture

Skubal has been the subject of trade rumors dating back to last offseason, with contenders circling as Detroit evaluates its timeline. For now, the focus is on getting him back to elite form. But with Flaherty’s status uncertain and the team hovering around .500, every start matters—both for the standings and for the front office’s long-term plans.

If Skubal picks up where he left off, the Tigers suddenly have a luxury problem. If Flaherty misses time and the rotation starts to creak, that same luxury could turn into a necessity.
