Teen in Coma After Assault Outside MSG Following NBA Finals Game 4

The NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs were already marred by escalating violence outside Madison Square Garden. Then came Wednesday night.

A 17-year-old is now in a coma after being attacked by a group of people following Game 4, according to a report from Matt Moret of The Athletic. The teen was reportedly punched and kicked, then suffered a seizure. The suspect remains at large.

The NYPD says a group approached the teen outside the Garden, an argument started, and a man allegedly struck the victim, according to a statement. Police released a photo of the suspect wanted for gang assault.

This is the third consecutive incident of crowd violence tied to the Finals in New York. After Game 3, a brawl broke out, leading to 20 arrests and injuries to five officers. After Game 2, which was played in San Antonio, 17 people were arrested. After Game 4, 15 more arrests were made.

Crowd Chaos Post-Game Draws Heavier Police Presence

The NYPD acknowledged the pattern in a statement Thursday: “Once again, there were large crowds of people who engaged in incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior last night both during and after the game. This demonstrates exactly why the NYPD has increased our presence in and around Madison Square Garden.”

Earlier in the series, fans were caught on video throwing eggs at Spurs star Victor Wembanyama as he left a hotel. The teen’s assault is the most severe outcome so far, with his condition still unconfirmed by police as of late Thursday.

The Knicks have not commented on the incident. The team’s focus remains on the Finals, but the off-court violence is sparking concern among city officials and league observers about safety measures during high-stakes playoff games.

What Comes Next

The NYPD has not provided an update on the teen’s condition or announced any additional arrests. With the series heading back to San Antonio, some fans are worried the chaos could shift venues. Law enforcement in Texas is preparing for a potentially hostile atmosphere.

For now, a 17-year-old lies in a coma, and the man accused of putting him there is still on the streets.
