Magic Johnson Warns Knicks Against Breaking Up Roster to Chase Giannis: ‘Don’t Change’

With the New York Knicks just one win away from an NBA championship, the rumors that once linked them to Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo have gone quiet. But NBA legend Magic Johnson wants to keep it that way — and he’s not mincing words about why.

Appearing on ESPN’s First Take, Johnson made a forceful case that the Knicks would be foolish to gut their current roster for a blockbuster trade, even for a two-time MVP like Antetokounmpo. Instead, he argued that the chemistry and toughness that got them this far are irreplaceable.

The Magic formula: Keep the band together

“I don’t wanna hear no talk about Giannis, or no other player coming to this team,” Johnson told Stephen A. Smith. “This is a great team. I’ve watched a lot of basketball. The way these guys love each other, play for each other, pull for one another, you’re not gonna see this anywhere else. The grit, the toughness, that’s how they beat you. Together.”

Johnson’s point is simple: trading for Giannis would require shipping out multiple key contributors — a price that could dismantle the very identity that made New York a Finals contender. “Now, if you trade for Giannis, how many dudes you got to give up just to get him? It’s a different team now. The whole team changes,” he added.

Would the Bucks actually move Giannis?

Despite the Knicks’ success, rumors persist that the Bucks are monitoring the Finals closely. According to reports from earlier this week, Milwaukee’s interest in moving Antetokounmpo could spike if New York somehow blows the series. But even then, a deal appears unlikely — especially with other suitors jumping into the conversation.

Reports from the offseason indicated that Karl-Anthony Towns might interest Milwaukee in a potential trade package. However, the Miami Heat have since emerged as one of the reported front-runners for Giannis should he become available, pushing the Knicks further to the sidelines.

For now, Johnson’s warning echoes what many Knicks fans are already feeling: the team has something special, and chasing shiny objects could ruin it. Whether New York’s front office listens remains the biggest question — but with a championship within reach, the answer seems obvious.
