Texas Pulls a Defensive Recruiting Double-Dip: 4-Star EDGE JaBarrius Garror Spurns Georgia, Auburn

Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns have flipped the recruiting script in the Deep South, plucking a four-star pass rusher out of Alabama — a state where programs like Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia typically lock down local talent. On Friday, Vigor High School’s JaBarrius Garror announced his commitment to Texas, choosing the Longhorns over Georgia, Auburn, and Florida State, according to a report from Hayes Fawcett of Rivals and On3 Sports.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound edge rusher is rated the No. 12 player at his position nationally in the 2027 class and sits at No. 107 overall on Rivals’ board. He made 21 total visits during his recruitment but only one official trip — to Texas — which ultimately sealed the deal. That kind of early trust in the Longhorns’ coaching staff speaks volumes about how Sarkisian and his defensive brain trust are selling the program’s future in the SEC.

Two Defensive Line Wins in Two Days

Garror’s commitment came less than 24 hours after Texas landed four-star interior defensive lineman Kasi Currie, another prospect who chose the Longhorns over Georgia, Ohio State, and Oregon. Currie is a disruptive force on the interior, and paired with Garror’s edge-rushing ability, the Longhorns are stacking the front seven with the kind of athleticism that translates in the SEC trenches.

This back-to-back haul represents the 13th and 14th commitments for Texas’ 2027 recruiting class, with eight of those being four-star prospects. As of Friday, On3 Sports ranks the class No. 10 nationally and No. 4 within the SEC — a strong early foundation for a group that won’t step on campus for two more years.

“BREAKING: Four-Star EDGE JaBarrius Garror has Committed to Texas, he tells me for Rivals,” Fawcett posted, signaling that the Longhorns won this battle before the spring evaluation period even heats up.

What Garror Brings to Austin

Garror is listed at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, but his frame suggests he can pack on more weight without losing the burst that makes him a nightmare for offensive tackles. His film shows quick hands, a relentless motor, and the ability to bend the edge — traits that defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski can develop into a full-time starter.

For a Texas program that has struggled at times to generate consistent pressure in big games, adding a player with Garror’s motor is a statement. The Longhorns are not just recruiting to reload; they are recruiting to dominate the line of scrimmage against the likes of Alabama, LSU, and Oklahoma in SEC play.

Texas currently has no edge rusher committed for the 2027 class besides Garror, meaning he could be the centerpiece of a small but talented group on the defensive edge. Sarkisian has shown he can close on top defensive talent from states outside Texas — this time poaching from Georgia, Auburn, and Florida State’s backyards.

The Longhorns are expected to add more commitments in the coming weeks as spring visits ramp up. But for now, Sarkisian can celebrate a critical win in a recruiting battle that stretched across three SEC border states.
