The $275 Million Question: Could the Celtics Actually Steal Giannis from the Heat?

The Boston Celtics have never been shy about swinging for the fences. But a potential move for Giannis Antetokounmpo? That would be a franchise-altering swing that reshapes the Eastern Conference for years.

According to a report from Sam Amick and Eric Nehm of The Athletic, the Celtics have emerged as a legitimate threat to the Miami Heat in the race for the Milwaukee Bucks superstar — but only under one very specific condition.

The Contract That Changes Everything

The key factor, per league sources cited by The Athletic, is whether Antetokounmpo would be willing to sign a four-year, $275 million extension with Boston. If that numbers lines up, the Celtics become a “serious threat” to the Heat’s long-held position as the favorites.

“If Antetokounmpo would be willing to sign the four-year, $275 million extension in Boston, as league sources indicated would be the case, the Celtics pose a serious threat to the Heat’s pursuit,” Amick and Nehm wrote.

The obvious centerpiece of any such deal would be Jaylen Brown, who is “widely believed to be the most prominent player who would come the Bucks’ way,” according to the report. However, rival teams expect Milwaukee would then flip the 29-year-old forward for younger assets and draft picks, rather than building around him long-term.

The Heat Factor Isn’t as Clear as It Seems

Miami has been the betting favorite to land Antetokounmpo for months. But the Athletic’s reporting suggests the Greek Freak has “known intrigue” with Boston — and, perhaps more importantly, “concerns about how thin the Heat roster might be if he makes the Miami move.”

That hesitation from Antetokounmpo could be the crack the Celtics need. While the Heat offer South Beach allure and Pat Riley’s track record, Boston can counter with a deeper supporting cast, a proven front office, and a roster that already contends for titles — even without him.

What’s Next in the Giannis Sweepstakes?

The report also notes that it’s unclear how many other teams are truly in the mix. “It’s unclear if the market beyond Miami is surprisingly soft, so to speak, or if some teams are waiting until Milwaukee gets closer to its self-administered deadline to be more forthcoming about their true level of interest,” Amick and Nehm wrote.

For now, the Celtics are the intriguing wild card — a team with the assets, the market, and the roster to make a serious push. Whether Antetokounmpo actually wants to make that move is still the $275 million question.
