The Brewers are sitting pretty at 66-40, first in the NL Central, and they’ve got a farm system that other teams envy. So it makes sense that ESPN’s Jeff Passan would float a trade idea that sends Tigers ace Tarik Skubal to Milwaukee. The proposed deal: pitcher Logan Henderson, second baseman Josh Adamczewski, and infielder Ricky Moneys.
Passan, writing in a piece where experts acted as team GMs, took the Brewers’ chair and argued the move is worth the short-term pain. ‘And as painful as it would be to give up a good rotation piece in Henderson, a surefire big leaguer in Adamczewski and a high-ceiling talent in Moneys, Milwaukee’s farm depth allows this sort of deal,’ he wrote. ‘Models don’t like it, but this isn’t the time to listen to them. It’s time to headline a rotation with Skubal and Misiorowski and let the rest take care of itself.’
Skubal, 27, is having a monster season for Detroit. A 2.34 ERA, 140 strikeouts in 119 innings, and the kind of stuff that makes front offices dream. Pair him with Jacob Misiorowski, the Brewers’ electric young arm, and you’ve got a 1-2 punch that could carry a team deep into October. The Brewers have the prospects to make it happen. The question is whether they have the stomach for it.
But not everyone is sold. MLB insider Bob Nightengale doesn’t see it happening. ‘They simply don’t believe that Skubal will be the magic elixir for all of their needs,’ Nightengale wrote. ‘Simply, there’s too much risk for the Brewers to take on Skubal when they know they’re going to be in the postseason, anyway.’
Passan has been pushing the idea on social media too. On the platform Threads, he said the Brewers are ‘motivated’ to make a big move and that their farm system is deep enough ‘to pull it off.’ But Nightengale’s skepticism reflects a real tension in Milwaukee. The Brewers have been good enough to win without a blockbuster. Their rotation has been solid. Their bullpen has been a strength. Adding Skubal would be a luxury, not a necessity.
And there’s the risk. Skubal is under team control through 2026, so he’s not a rental. But trading multiple top prospects for any pitcher, even one as good as Skubal, comes with downside. Injuries happen. Regression happens. The Brewers have weathered injuries before. They’ve built a culture of development and depth. Throwing that away for one guy, even a great one, might not be their style.
The deadline is next Monday. The Brewers have decisions to make. And the Skubal rumor mill will keep spinning until then.
