Tennessee State athletic director Mikki Allen is out for now. University president Dwayne Tucker announced Thursday that Allen has been placed on administrative leave, two months after six of the department’s head coaches signed a letter demanding a change in leadership.
“We were made aware of multiple concerns surrounding the leadership of the TSU athletic department through an open letter from six head coaches on May 28, 2026,” Tucker said in a statement. “I took these concerns very seriously and immediately launched an internal investigation. Effective today, TSU athletic director Dr. Mikki Allen has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.”
The Coaches Who Signed On
The letter wasn’t just a gripe from a couple of frustrated assistants. Among the six signatures were two of the highest-profile figures on campus: new football coach Reggie Barlow and men’s basketball coach Nolan Smith. That gave the letter real weight and essentially forced the university’s hand.
According to The Tennessean, the coaches detailed a long list of issues under Allen’s watch. They cited a lack of transparency and communication, uneven distribution of resources and what they described as a missing vision for where the athletic department was headed. They also pointed to concerns about collaboration between programs, the well-being of student-athletes and whether certain teams were getting enough institutional support to compete.

Tucker said an interim AD will be named soon. The university hasn’t said how long Allen’s leave will last or when the investigation might wrap up. Allen started at Tennessee State in 2022 and was the first person to hold the AD job under Tucker’s administration.
This kind of public mutiny from a group of head coaches is rare at any level of college athletics, let alone at an HBCU program trying to build momentum. Tennessee State has been working to raise its profile, especially in football and basketball, where both programs have hired notable names in recent years. Barlow came over after a successful run at Alabama State, and Smith arrived after spending years as an assistant at Duke and in the NBA.
For now, the department operates in a holding pattern. The investigation continues and the coaching staff that went public is waiting to see if the changes they asked for actually happen. Tucker’s statement suggests the university is taking the concerns seriously but gave no timeline for resolution.
