Darnell Wright’s Mega Deal at Risk — The Tackle Who Could Leapfrog Him

Chicago Bears fans have been dreaming of locking down right tackle Darnell Wright with a record-setting extension — but a stunning new theory from a top ESPN insider suggests the crown might already belong to someone else.

According to Bill Barnwell, the real king of the tackle market could be Los Angeles Chargers star Joe Alt, not Wright — and the gap between the two might be wider than Bears fans want to admit. Sources close to the situation claim that while Wright is on track for a massive payday, Alt’s rare versatility could push his value into an entirely different stratosphere.

The Versatility Factor That Changes Everything

Barnwell reportedly pointed out that Wright, despite earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2025 and posting an elite 85.6 run-blocking grade — sixth among all tackles — has only ever played on the right side. Alt, meanwhile, has proven he can dominate on both the left and right edges, a flexibility that insiders say makes him a more valuable asset in a league obsessed with protecting blind sides.

“Wright is a very good player and deserves to be paid, but Alt might be a different caliber of tackle and get paid accordingly,” Barnwell wrote, according to reports. One NFL talent evaluator, speaking on condition of anonymity, told us: “You can build an entire offensive line around a guy like Alt. Wright is elite, but he’s specialized. That distinction matters in contract talks.”

What This Means for the Bears

The timing couldn’t be more critical. Wright becomes eligible for an extension this offseason, and with Chicago’s young playmakers still on rookie deals, general manager Ryan Poles has the cap room to go big. But Barnwell estimates the Bears might cap Wright’s deal around $25 million per year — a figure that would be huge, but could still trail Alt’s eventual number by a significant margin.

Bears fans are buzzing about whether Poles can afford to let Wright walk if the price tag spirals. According to insiders, the team is reportedly watching Alt’s contract negotiations with the Chargers like hawks, knowing it could set the benchmark — or shatter it.

For now, all eyes are on Wright’s 2026 campaign. If he continues opening up rushing lanes and keeping quarterback Caleb Williams upright, the money will come. But the real drama? Whether the Bears will have to break the bank — or watch their star tackle get topped by a rival.
