Man United Told There’s a ‘Great Market Opportunity’ for This World Cup Star. Here’s the Catch.

Manchester United already added two midfielders this summer. They might not be done yet.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Roma’s Manu Kone is available at a price that has several top clubs paying attention. Ornstein called it a “great market opportunity” for anyone looking to add a proven midfielder without breaking the bank.

Kone, 25, spent the 2026 World Cup putting together some genuinely “excellent” performances for France. He followed that up with a strong Serie A season for Roma. The kind of form that usually drives a transfer fee through the roof. But apparently not this time.

“It’s, from what we hear, a great market opportunity, the value that you could get him from Roma,” Ornstein said.

Roma brought Kone in from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2024 on an initial loan that later became permanent. He made his name in the Bundesliga as a physical, box-to-box presence who can break up play and push forward. The sort of profile United have been missing since Casemiro’s deal ran out and he left Old Trafford.

United have already signed Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos for midfield this window. That’s two new faces. A third might feel like overkill to some fans, but there’s logic here.

Casemiro is gone. Manuel Ugarte is out with a long-term injury and hadn’t exactly locked down a starting spot before getting hurt. Kobbie Mainoo is still around, obviously, but manager Michael Carrick is looking at a schedule that includes Champions League games again. More matches means more rotation. More rotation means needing more bodies who can actually play.

Fabrizio Romano also linked United to Kone recently on his YouTube channel. So the noise is consistent from multiple outlets. Nothing is done yet. But when Ornstein and Romano are both talking about the same player as a realistic target, it’s usually worth watching.

Kone turns 26 later this year. He’s not a young project. He’s a guy who should be entering his prime right about now. For the right fee, that’s exactly the kind of signing that plugs a hole without dominating a transfer budget.

Whether United actually pull the trigger depends on what Roma wants. But the signal from the club’s camp is clear: they’re still shopping.
