Cameron Brink’s Status vs. the Lynx Could Decide the Sparks’ Season

The Los Angeles Sparks are limping toward the All-Star break, and it’s not just because of their 10-12 record. After firing general manager Raegan Pebley last week, the team now faces a must-win situation against the best squad in the WNBA. But they might have to do it without one of their biggest weapons.

Cameron Brink is listed as questionable for Wednesday’s matchup with the Minnesota Lynx, still dealing with that same left ankle sprain that’s kept her out since June 15. The rookie forward hasn’t played in over three weeks, and the Sparks have felt her absence in a big way.

What’s the injury situation?

Brink originally went down against the Valkyries, logging 10 points and two rebounds before the ankle gave out. The team called it a sprain at the time, but here we are in late July with no clear timeline for her return. And it gets worse. Kelsey Plum is still out with that lower leg injury she suffered in late June, so LA is essentially running on fumes against a Lynx team that sits at 18-6.

The weird part? Minnesota is banged up too. Napheesa Collier is questionable with a left ankle issue, and Emma Cechova is out with a right knee problem. But even without those two, the Lynx still have Olivia Miles running the show, and she’s looked every bit like the Rookie of the Year candidate everyone expected.

For the Sparks, the math is simple. They’re five games back in the loss column with the second half of the season looming. Dropping a game to a team you’re not supposed to beat isn’t ideal, but losing by double digits because your two best players are in street clothes feels different. It sends a message about where this franchise really is.

Can LA steal one without its stars?

Maybe. The Sparks have shown flashes when Brink and Plum are out, but consistency has been the issue. They’ll need someone to step up in a big way, and it’s not clear who that someone is. Dearica Hamby has been solid but she can’t do it alone against a Lynx defense that suffocates everything.

Tip-off is at 1 PM Eastern from Target Center in Minneapolis. The Sparks might catch a break if Collier sits, but even then, this feels like an uphill climb. If LA wants to make any noise in the second half, they need to find a way to win games like this one. Even if it means doing it without their stars.
