Micky Arison Is Back as NBA Board Chairman. Here’s What That Means for the League.

Micky Arison is returning to a job he already knows well. The Miami Heat owner was unanimously elected as the next Chairman of the NBA Board of Governors, league sources confirmed. He takes over from Toronto Raptors owner Larry Tanenbaum, who had held the position since 2017.

This isn’t Arison’s first time running the show at the board level. He served a three-year term as chairman starting in October 2005. So the 77-year-old executive knows exactly what he’s stepping into. The Board of Governors is basically the league’s most powerful ownership body — it signs off on major decisions, from rules changes to expansion to TV deals.

A Familiar Face with a Hall of Fame Cred

Arison has been a fixture around the NBA since he took over the Heat in 1995. That tenure produced three championships and turned Miami into one of the league’s model franchises. He’s sat on the Board of Governors for years and has been credited with pushing initiatives like international expansion and revenue sharing among teams.

His standing in the sport got another boost last fall when Arison was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class. He was honored as a contributor for his impact on the Heat organization and the league. He became the 11th person with Heat ties to earn the honor, joining Pat Riley, Alonzo Mourning, Shaquille O’Neal, and Dwyane Wade.

“I look forward to working closely in this new capacity with Adam, the league office and my fellow team governors to champion our teams and players, ensuring we continue to deliver exciting and unforgettable experiences for our fans,” Arison said in a statement.

More Than Just Basketball

Arison also serves as the longtime chairman of Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest cruise company. That gives him a rare dual role atop two major global enterprises. His business background — paired with three decades of NBA ownership experience — is a big reason why his fellow governors turned to him again to help steer the league’s future.

The timing of his return matters. The NBA is navigating a new media rights deal, potential expansion, and ongoing conversations about player workload and the regular season schedule. Having a steady hand like Arison, who has seen the league evolve through the 2000s and into the modern era, probably feels like a safe bet for the other owners.

For Heat fans, this is mostly a background story. But it also means Miami’s ownership voice just got louder at the highest level of league decision-making. That can’t hurt when it comes to things like scheduling, cap rules, or whatever comes next.
