An ESPN insider just pitched boxing matches as Summer League entertainment after the Adebayo-Herro scuffle

So here’s what actually happened. Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, two guys who just got swapped in the Giannis Antetokounmpo blockbuster, reportedly got into it on a Summer League practice court. Nobody’s releasing video. Nobody’s confirming details. But the rumor mill is spinning hard enough that an ESPN insider decided to propose something that will never happen.

Tim McMahon, who covers the NBA for ESPN, floated an idea during a recent segment. He said the league should consider adding boxing matches to the Summer League schedule. Not between actual boxers. Between players who allegedly have beef.

His example? Bam Adebayo challenging Tyler Herro to a real fight at halftime of a Summer League game. He also threw out Jaylen Brown potentially squaring off with Jayson Tatum, based on some vague comments Brown has made over the years that people have interpreted as tension.

“What I suggest in a case like this is, what Bam does is he challenges Tyler Herro to a boxing match,” McMahon said. “If, for example Jaylen Brown feels a certain way about Jayson Tatum as he’s kind of hinted, he can challenge Jayson Tatum to a boxing match. These would be done at halftime when their teams meet during summer league.”

There is zero chance this actually happens

The NBA is not going to turn its developmental showcase into a pay-per-view fight card. That’s obvious. But McMahon’s point was less about policy and more about the entertainment value of watching guys who don’t like each other settle things with gloves on. Which, fair enough, would draw ratings.

The background here matters. The Herro-Adebayo altercation reportedly stemmed from Herro making comments on social media about Adebayo after the trade that sent Giannis to Miami. The exact content of those comments is still murky. But the Heat and Bucks now have a genuine rivalry subplot built into their next few regular season meetings.

As for the Brown-Tatum thing, there’s no actual evidence of bad blood there. They’ve won a title together. They’ve been All-Stars together. But Brown has said a few things over the years that fans parsed for tension, and the internet being what it is, that turned into a narrative McMahon felt comfortable referencing.

The real story is the Heat-Bucks rematch

No boxing match is happening at Summer League. But the first regular season game between Miami and Milwaukee with Adebayo and Herro on opposite sides? That’s going to be appointment viewing. Social media will be unbearable. The handshake line will be analyzed frame by frame. Somebody will probably get a tech foul within the first five minutes.

That’s the actual consequence of this whole thing. Not a boxing ring in Vegas. Just a regular season game that suddenly matters way more than it should in October.
