A Transfer Quarterback Just Became the Highest-Paid Player in College Sports

Darian Mensah left Duke after winning an ACC Championship and leading the Blue Devils to their first outright conference title since 1962. On Tuesday, he officially became the most valuable athlete in college sports — at least by On3’s math.

The Miami quarterback’s NIL valuation hit $6.5 million, per On3’s updated rankings. That puts him ahead of every football and basketball player in the country. For context, the highest-paid basketball players on the list, Kentucky forward Milan Momcilovic and Louisville center Flory Bidunga, are both valued at $6 million.

Mensah’s path here wasn’t clean. He entered the transfer portal on the very last day it was open, which caught a lot of people off guard. Miami moved fast and sealed the deal shortly after. That came at a cost — Mensah had to reach a settlement with Duke to resolve a contract dispute before he could leave. The numbers floating around suggest Miami is paying him more than any other quarterback in college football this season.

The Numbers Behind the Move

On3’s system tracks actual compensation from schools and collectives, not projected marketing dollars. So Mensah’s $6.5 million figure represents real money that’s been or will be paid. He threw for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns last season, leading the ACC in both categories. That production, plus the timing of his portal entry, drove the price tag.

Mensah now steps into a Miami program that just played for a national championship. He replaces Carson Beck at quarterback and will have wide receiver Malachi Toney as his top target. Some analysts already think that duo could be the best quarterback-wide receiver combo in the conference next season.

Who Else Made the List

The rest of On3’s Top 10 is heavy with quarterbacks and a couple of hoops stars. Oregon’s Dante Moore, Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith, and Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss all cracked the football side. Momcilovic and Bidunga represent college basketball at the top of the valuation list.

None of them touch Mensah’s number, though. And with the way NIL valuations keep climbing, that $6.5 million mark might not hold for long. But for now, a kid who started last season at Duke is the single highest-paid player in all of college sports. That’s not something you see every day.
