Aston Villa’s midfield rebuild just got complicated by a player they used to have

Manchester United went out and grabbed Youri Tielemans this week, and it wasn’t just a normal signing. It was a direct hit on Aston Villa’s plans. Tielemans had been Villa’s best midfielder last season. He helped them finally win a European trophy after 44 years of waiting. And now he’s gone.

United triggered his release clause for about £35 million. The Belgian passed his medical and is signing a contract through 2031. He’s the second midfielder United has brought in after Andrey Santos, and according to multiple reports, they’re not done yet.

Manu Kone is the next name on the list

Italian outlet ASRomaLive.it reports that United are still looking at Manu Kone. The French midfielder has been one of France’s key players at the World Cup. He’s 25, plays for Roma, and has the kind of physical, ball-winning profile United desperately need in midfield. The team has reportedly already made contact.

But here’s where it gets interesting for Aston Villa. They’ve now entered the race for Kone too, after Amadou Onana went down with a serious injury at the World Cup. Villa made a concrete inquiry about Kone’s situation and what Roma might want for him. The answer is at least €60 million, which works out to about £51.2 million.

A bidding war is brewing

The report calls it a real auction about to break out in the Premier League for Kone. Atletico Madrid tried to sign him before the World Cup, but Kone turned them down. He wanted to wait for a Premier League team to call, and it looks like that strategy paid off.

Earlier this year, The Peoples Person relayed that Kone is very keen on a move to Old Trafford. His playing style fits what United needs: someone who wins duels, covers ground, and doesn’t stop running. Villa now have to compete with United for a player who seems to already have his heart set on Manchester.

Villa’s midfield took a hit when Tielemans left. Onana’s injury makes things worse. They need reinforcements, but United has the financial muscle and the player’s apparent preference. If Villa wants Kone, they’ll have to outbid a direct Premier League rival and convince a player who’s been eyeing Old Trafford for months.

Roma is holding firm on that €60 million asking price. We’ll see if either club blinks first.
