Tim Hasselbeck Makes the Case for Stefon Diggs to Join the Chiefs

Stefon Diggs is still looking for a team, and one former NFL quarterback thinks he knows exactly where the veteran wide receiver should land.

Tim Hasselbeck, who spent eight seasons in the league as a backup QB, went on ESPN’s “NFL Live” and made a pretty direct pitch for Diggs to join the Kansas City Chiefs. His reasoning? The Chiefs have the kind of established quarterback — Patrick Mahomes — who can handle a strong personality like Diggs.

“I do see the fit in Kansas City because it’s a team that’s got an established quarterback that can deal with a big personality,” Hasselbeck said. “Especially a guy that’s used to getting the football, who maybe would have to have a different role.”

And that last part is key. Diggs, who turned 32 in November, is coming off a one-year stint with the New England Patriots that ended with his release. He’s also dealing with multiple lawsuits and off-field issues that have made teams hesitant to sign him. He’s not the same guy who was a top target in Buffalo. But he might not need to be.

Hasselbeck pointed out that Kansas City’s wide receiver depth chart is thin behind starters Marquise Brown and Xavier Worthy. The list of backups includes names like Jimmy Holiday, Jalen Royals and Cyrus Allen — not exactly household names. Meanwhile, Rashee Rice’s availability for the full season is still unclear after his legal troubles. The Chiefs did a lot on defense in the draft and basically said they’re running it back with the same receivers from last year.

“I think that there’s value in Stefon Diggs in some role,” Hasselbeck added.

The question is whether Diggs, who has a reputation for demanding the ball and occasionally clashing with coaches and quarterbacks, would accept a reduced role. But on a team like Kansas City, where Mahomes runs the show and the culture is already established, it might work.

It’s worth noting that no team has publicly shown serious interest yet. Diggs is still a free agent as training camps approach, and his legal situation isn’t going away. But if a contender like the Chiefs decides they need one more weapon for a Super Bowl run, Hasselbeck made a pretty solid argument for why Diggs could be that guy.
