Man City’s €80m Midfield Target Now Has Man United Circling for a Hijack

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild just got a lot more complicated. And a lot more expensive.

The club is reportedly preparing to jump into the race for Ayyoub Bouaddi, the 18-year-old Lille midfielder who broke out at the World Cup for Morocco. The problem? Manchester City is already deep in the conversation, and several other top European clubs are lurking.

According to reports on social media, United is eyeing a transfer hijack of City’s pursuit. Neither club has confirmed anything yet, but the chatter is loud enough that it’s worth paying attention to.

Bouaddi’s performances in Qatar were not a fluke. The teenager showed composure on the ball that you don’t often see from someone his age. Tactical awareness, calm under pressure, the ability to read the game a step ahead. He went from being a promising Ligue 1 talent to one of the most talked-about names in the summer window basically overnight.

The price tag is real

Lille holds all the leverage here. Bouaddi is under contract until 2029, and they are not in a rush to sell. talkSPORT has reported that Lille could demand as much as €100 million for an immediate transfer. If United or City are willing to let him stay in France on loan for another season, the fee could drop closer to €80 million.

That’s still an enormous number for an 18-year-old. But this is the market for elite young midfielders right now, and the World Cup only amplified his value.

FourFourTwo reported that Arsenal and Liverpool have already accepted Lille’s loan-back condition. Those two clubs are also in the mix. Chelsea and Bayern Munich have been monitoring him too. So the competition is not just the Manchester clubs. It’s half of Europe.

What United is actually getting

Bouaddi is not a finished product. Nobody is at 18. But his ceiling looks elite. He can dictate tempo from deep positions, he doesn’t panic when pressed, and he has the physical tools to develop into a box-to-box presence. United’s midfield has lacked composure and mobility for a while now. Bouaddi could eventually solve both of those problems.

Eventually is the key word there.

If United pays €80 million and sends him back to Lille on loan, they are betting on 2027 and beyond. That’s a tough sell for a fanbase that wants improvement right now. United needs experienced reinforcements who can step in next season and lift the level of the starting eleven. Not only prospects.

But the counter-argument is simple. Players like this don’t hit the market often. If you wait until he’s 21 and fully developed, the price will be even higher — or he’ll be off the board entirely. Signing him now could look like brilliant business in three years.

For now, this is a race that’s only getting more crowded. And expensive.
