Manchester United Pulls Out of Ederson Deal. Atalanta Responds With a Contract Offer.

Well, that fell apart fast. Manchester United and Atalanta had reportedly agreed on a €45 million package for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, with the move set to go through after the 2026 World Cup. But here we are in mid-July, and United has walked away. The reason? Something came up during the medical.

Ederson had an initial round of tests done in the U.S. while playing in the World Cup. That wasn’t enough for United. They flew him to the U.K. for more extensive checks. After those, they decided to kill the deal. Atalanta, for their part, insists there are no major medical issues with the player. They’re adamant about that.

So now what? Ederson is sitting on a contract that runs through summer 2027 — just one year left. And according to Fabrizio Romano, Atalanta is ready to offer him a new deal. Not exactly a panic move, but it’s a clear signal they’re not planning to let him go cheaply if someone else comes calling.

Atalanta’s stance: No problem here

The club has been pretty open about their position. They believe Ederson is fit and healthy. In their view, there’s nothing wrong. They want to sit down with his representatives in the coming weeks to talk about his future. Whether that means a raise, an extension, or just a conversation about his role, we don’t know yet.

But here’s the thing: Atalanta is ‘prepared’ to welcome Ederson back into the squad, per reports. Offering a new contract could also just be a way to protect his transfer value if another club comes in before the window closes or in January. Smart business either way.

Ederson’s summer so far

The 26-year-old is on vacation after his World Cup stint with Brazil. He played a decent role for the Seleção, but nothing that would dramatically inflate his price tag. Atalanta originally signed him from Corinthians back in 2022 for around €21 million, and he’s been a consistent presence in midfield since.

For United, this is just another saga in what’s been a messy summer. They’ve got needs all over the field, and midfield was supposed to be addressed by this signing. Now they’re back to square one — or maybe they already have another target lined up. Wouldn’t be surprising.

For Atalanta, keeping Ederson is Plan A. If that changes, they’ll make sure they get paid what they think he’s worth.
