Diego Forlán Steps In as Uruguay’s Interim Coach After Bielsa’s Exit

Diego Forlán is coming back to the Uruguay national team. This time, he’ll be on the sideline instead of leading the attack.

The 47-year-old former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid striker has been named interim manager of La Celeste, according to Ignacio Alonso, the president of Uruguay’s football association. The move comes after Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure ended following a disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign that didn’t meet expectations.

“If an agreement is reached with Diego Forlán in the next few hours, he will be the coach of the under-20 team and for the upcoming friendly matches,” Alonso said. “He is enthusiastic, even though there are still a few details to finalize.”

It sounds like Forlán is already on board in principle. The deal just needs some paperwork to get locked in.

What’s the plan for Forlán?

Forlán is expected to take charge of Uruguay’s remaining games in 2026, plus the March international break. That gives him a real audition window. If things go well, he could make a case to keep the job permanently. If not, the federation will look elsewhere.

This isn’t some random name thrown in a hat, either. Forlán played 112 times for Uruguay and scored 36 goals. He won the 2011 Copa América with his country and took home the Golden Ball as the best player at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He’s got serious pedigree and respect inside the locker room.

The under-20 role is also part of the package. That’s smart — it lets him build relationships with the next wave of talent while handling the senior team on an interim basis. Uruguay has a strong youth pipeline, and having a legend like Forlán involved at that level could pay off down the road.

Bielsa’s exit left a hole. The team never quite clicked when it mattered most at the World Cup, and the federation decided a change was needed. Forlán is a high-profile name who knows the culture and understands what it means to wear that shirt. Whether he can translate that into results as a coach is the open question.

For now, Uruguay fans have a reason to be curious. A club legend stepping in to steady the ship — that’s a storyline worth watching.
