Marcus Freeman’s NFL Snub Paid Off. Notre Dame Just Landed a 4-Star Linebacker Because of It.

Notre Dame almost lost Marcus Freeman to the NFL this offseason. Instead, the Fighting Irish kept their head coach, and that decision is already paying dividends on the recruiting trail. The latest proof: four-star linebacker Roman Igwebuike picked Notre Dame over Indiana, Missouri, and Clemson on Saturday.

Igwebuike is a 6-foot-3, 220-pound prospect out of Mount Carmel High School in Chicago. He confirmed his commitment to Hayes Fawcett of On3/Rivals, and he made it clear this is personal. “All glory to God!! I will give 110% everyday to bring a natty to my hometown,” Igwebuike said. He’s staying close to home, and he wants to win a national championship for the program that’s practically in his backyard.

Freeman’s own background probably helped seal this one. He was a standout linebacker at Ohio State, then coached the position at Kent State and Purdue. So Igwebuike isn’t just getting a head coach. He’s getting a guy who knows exactly what it takes to play that spot at a high level. That kind of connection matters in recruiting, especially when you’re fighting off schools like Clemson and Missouri.

But let’s not overlook the coach who actually did the legwork here. Linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary led the charge for Igwebuike, and this commit feels like a long time coming. Jean-Mary finally landed a blue-chip linebacker for the 2027 class, which gives the staff some breathing room after a recent disappointment.

Notre Dame lost four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri earlier this year. He had committed to the 2028 class early, then flipped to Oklahoma on July 3. That stung. But landing Igwebuike helps balance the scales a little. The Fighting Irish now have 22 verbal commitments for this cycle, including 13 four-star prospects. That puts them at No. 2 in the national recruiting rankings per 247Sports and On3/Rivals.

Freeman turned down NFL interest to stay in South Bend. Every time a recruit like Igwebuike picks Notre Dame, it looks less like a gamble and more like a strategy.
