Mike Trout has been an All-Star 12 times now. That puts him in some seriously small company. Only three American League players have ever been elected to start that many Midsummer Classics. But this year’s game in Philadelphia means something more than the number.
Trout grew up in Millville, New Jersey. That’s about 45 minutes from Citizens Bank Park. So when MLB announced the 2026 All-Star Game would be in Philly, Trout circled it. He said as much on MLB Network Radio after officially being named an AL starter.
“Yeah, I think it’s just, it’s just even more special because it’s, you know, in Philly, and this is something I had circled on the list, you know, when I first—when they first announced it was in Philly.”
The pause in Trout’s voice says a lot. He doesn’t usually get this personal about where the game is played. But this feels like a home game for a guy who has spent his whole career three time zones away.
Injuries Made This One Tougher to Reach
It’s been seven years since Trout actually played in an All-Star Game. Injuries kept him out in 2020 (pandemic), 2021 (calf), 2022 (back), 2023 (hamate bone), 2024 (knee), and 2025 (another hamstring issue). So this isn’t just another selection. It’s a return.
Trout came back from a right hamstring strain recently and has looked like himself at the plate. The Angels have been careful with him, but he’s healthy enough to start an All-Star Game. That alone is news given his recent history.
Family Makes the Trip Meaningful
Trout’s wife Jessica and their kids will be there. His parents can drive down. It’s the kind of week that reminds you these guys are still people from somewhere. For Trout, Philadelphia is where baseball first meant something. Now he gets to play the biggest individual honor of the regular season in front of people who watched him become that kid from Millville who turned into a legend.
He’s the Angels’ franchise player. He’s a three-time MVP. He’s probably headed to Cooperstown someday. But this week in Philly? It’s personal in a way that stats can’t capture.
The American League lineup will feature Trout in center field. The game is July 14. And for one night, one of baseball’s greats gets to go home.
