Tristan Peters will remember this one for a while. The Chicago White Sox outfielder hit for the cycle Friday night against the Athletics, becoming just the third player in MLB to pull it off this season. And yeah, he was pretty pumped about it.
“It’s No. 1, for sure,” Peters said, via the Associated Press, when asked where it ranked among his career achievements. “That was incredible. It’s awesome, amazing.”
The White Sox rolled to a 14-1 win, improving to 48-45 on the season. They head into Saturday tied with the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the AL Central. Not bad for a team that spent the last couple years as a punchline.
Peters joins Harper and Crow-Armstrong in rare club
Peters singled, doubled, tripled and homered in the game. He’s now part of a pretty small group this year. The other two guys to hit for the cycle: Bryce Harper of the Phillies and Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Cubs. That’s it.
“It’s impressive, there haven’t been too many of those,” White Sox manager Will Venable said. “Those are pretty rare, and Tristan has done such a good job of playing the right way — putting swings on good pitches to hit.”
This White Sox team looks different
Chicago had been a mess. They dealt away guys like Garrett Crochet, racked up 100-loss seasons, and fans had basically checked out. But something’s shifted. The White Sox are winning now, and they’re doing it even with star rookie slugger Munetaka Murakami coming off an injury. Murakami was back in the lineup Friday and got a hit, but it was Peters who stole the show.
The White Sox have a shot at making some noise in the playoffs. They’re young, they’re hungry, and nights like Friday remind you this isn’t the same old Chicago team. They face the Athletics again Saturday.
