The Chicago Bulls are reportedly accelerating their search for a new head coach, and sources close to the organization say the pressure is mounting. After Billy Donovan’s abrupt departure in April following six tumultuous seasons, the franchise is in the midst of a full-scale rebuild — and the next hire could define their future for years to come.
Four Finalists Emerge — But Drama Is Brewing
According to veteran NBA insider Marc Stein of The Stein Report, the Bulls have allegedly narrowed their list of candidates to four names: Tiago Splitter, Ryan Schmidt, Micah Nori, and Wes Unseld Jr. Each is reportedly expected to sit for in-person interviews in the coming days. But insiders say the search is far from straightforward.
Tiago Splitter, currently head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, is said to be a top target — but here’s where it gets complicated. According to Stein, Splitter is also a finalist in Portland’s own coaching search to replace Chauncey Billups. Sources claim that process has been “slowed somewhat” by Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon’s split attention between the team and the Carolina Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup Final run. Could the Bulls end up in a bidding war for Splitter? One league insider told us it’s “very possible.”
Micah Nori, an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves, is reportedly in a similar position — reportedly also on Portland’s short list. The Bulls, according to insiders, are “watching closely” to see how the Blazers’ search shakes out before making their final move.
Outside Voice vs. Internal Option
While the Bulls are reportedly leaning toward bringing in an outside voice, they haven’t ruled out promoting from within. Wes Unseld Jr., currently a Bulls assistant, is still very much in the mix. But according to sources, if an external candidate is hired, Unseld Jr. is expected to be retained as an assistant — a move that could smooth over any tension in the locker room.
Ryan Schmidt, an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks, rounds out the list. All four candidates share a reputation for player development — a critical trait for a Bulls team that is reportedly committed to rebuilding through the draft. Chicago holds two top-20 picks in the upcoming NBA Draft, including the No. 4 overall selection.
Meanwhile, the organization is still reeling from a massive front-office shakeup. The Bulls recently hired Bryson Graham as Vice President of Basketball Operations, signaling a complete philosophical shift. One source described the situation as “a franchise trying to find its identity in a hurry.”
As the Bulls close in on a decision, fans are buzzing — and insiders are warning that the final choice could send shockwaves across the league.
