Manchester United Still Undecided on €45m Ederson Deal After Medical Scare

So here’s where things stand with Manchester United and Atalanta midfielder Ederson. It’s messy. And nobody seems to agree on what’s actually happening.

The deal was all but done back on June 2. €40.5 million guaranteed, another €4.5 million in add-ons. The player was in the U.S. with Brazil for the World Cup, so he only did an initial medical over there. That’s where things got weird.

United wanted more tests on something that showed up. After 48 hours of scans and reviews, a bunch of Italian outlets — Sky Sport Italia, Fabrizio Romano, Sportitalia — all reported that Manchester United had pulled the plug. They’d called Atalanta, told them the transfer was off. Case closed, or so it seemed.

But then BBC Sport and Sky Sports Deutschland pushed back. They said no, a final decision hasn’t been made yet. United’s still thinking about it.

The Italian media never claimed Ederson had a serious injury. Their read was that United just got cold feet five weeks after shaking hands on the deal. Maybe the club wants to renegotiate, drive the price down now that they’ve flagged an issue. Atalanta might not play ball there. They held firm on their valuation this whole time and might not appreciate the last-minute haggle.

What’s Actually Going On

It’s worth stepping back here. This isn’t the typical “failed medical” story where a player’s knee is held together with tape and prayers. Ederson played in the Champions League last season. He played for Brazil in the World Cup. He’s fine. Whatever United’s doctors flagged, it wasn’t a deal-breaker in Germany or with the national team.

So you have to wonder if this is more about the money than the medicine. United’s midfield needs are clear — they’ve been chasing a physical presence next to their playmakers all summer. Ederson fits that profile. But €45 million is a lot for a club that’s been burned by big transfers before. Maybe they’re trying to shave off a few million and call it a win.

Atalanta’s position is the wild card. They’ve already lost key players this window. They don’t have to sell. And if United comes back asking for a discount after the whole saga played out in public, the Italians might just tell them to kick rocks.

Ederson is back in Bergamo now. He’s training. He’s waiting. And Manchester United still hasn’t told anyone what they’re doing. That silence is the only thing everyone can agree on.
