The LeBron James free agency watch has entered its annual phase of controlled chaos. Nobody knows where he’s going. Not yet. Not for sure. And the league’s rumor mill is running at full speed.
Could he go back to Miami? Pair up with Giannis Antetokounmpo in a way that would reshape the Eastern Conference overnight. The Heat have the cap flexibility and the history. LeBron won two rings there. It’s not hard to imagine.
Golden State is another possibility. Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are two of his closest friends in the league. The Warriors have the pieces to make a deal work if they get creative. But that’s a big if. The luxury tax situation is brutal and the front office has never shown interest in that kind of upheaval.
Philadelphia just traded for Jaylen Brown. That’s a real contender now. Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Brown and maybe LeBron? That’s four All-Stars in one lineup. The Sixers would have to move serious salary to make it happen but they’ve shown they’re willing to take big swings.
And then there’s Cleveland. The storybook ending. LeBron going back to the Cavaliers for a third stint. It’s the sentimental favorite and our NBA insiders Brett Siegel and Tomer Azarly say that’s where the smart money is right now. The Cavs have a young core that fits around him. They have cap room. They have the emotional pull of finishing where it all started.
DeMar DeRozan hits the open market
DeRozan is an unrestricted free agent and there’s no shortage of suitors. He’s 34 but he’s still one of the most reliable mid-range scorers in the game. Teams like the Lakers and Bulls are in the mix. The Kings had some interest but our insiders say they’re not pursuing a Zach LaVine buyout. That door appears closed.
Extension talk is everywhere
Victor Wembanyama is eligible for a rookie max extension this summer. The Spurs will offer it. That’s not a question. The question is whether he signs it now or waits. Stephen Curry is also extension-eligible. He’s under contract through 2026 but Golden State wants to lock him up for life. Expect those talks to move quickly.
Nikola Jokic is reportedly planning to decline extension talks until 2027. He’s got three years left on his current deal and he’s not interested in negotiating early. That’s rare. Most stars want the security. Jokic seems content to let it play out.
Donovan Mitchell already signed his mega extension with the Cavs. That one is done. Kawhi Leonard and Dillon Brooks are among the other names who could get extensions this summer. Brooks has been quietly solid for Houston. Kawhi’s health is always the variable.
Other free agency intel worth knowing
Peyton Watson is likely to stay in Denver. The Nuggets want him and he wants to be there. A sign-and-trade for Jalen Duren with Detroit isn’t happening. The Pistons have made that clear. They see him as part of their future.
