Why the Dodgers Should Target Luis Castillo Over Tarik Skubal Before the Deadline

The Los Angeles Dodgers don’t exactly have a shopping list this July. Their roster is stacked, their farm system is deep, and they’ve already got the best record in the National League. But if there’s one area where even this team could use a little help, it’s the starting rotation.

Roki Sasaki has been inconsistent. Emmet Sheehan has been up and down. And while the Dodgers are inevitably linked to every big name on the market, the most obvious fit might not be the sexiest one. It’s Luis Castillo of the Seattle Mariners.

Castillo isn’t having a vintage season. His ERA sits at 4.79 across 17 starts. But look closer. In four of his last five outings, he’s allowed two earned runs or fewer. That’s the same guy who posted ERAs of 3.34, 3.64 and 3.54 over the last three seasons while making at least 30 starts each year. He’s figured something out recently, and that matters.

Now compare that to Tarik Skubal. The Tigers lefty is having a monster year and would cost a fortune in prospects. The Dodgers could absolutely land him if they wanted to. But do they need to empty the farm for a guy they don’t desperately need? Probably not. Castillo would come cheaper, and he’d still give L.A. a reliable veteran arm in the middle of the rotation.

What a realistic trade might look like

Here’s the thing about the Mariners: they’re actually competing this season. They’re not in sell mode. But they do have an outfield problem. Julio Rodriguez is hurt. Victor Robles has been brutal at the plate. And while Randy Arozarena is fine in left, the team could use another right-handed bat and some depth.

So a deal for Castillo wouldn’t be a salary dump. It would need to help Seattle now and later.

One proposed package that makes sense: the Dodgers send outfielder Alex Call, plus two prospects — outfielder Charles Davalan and right-hander Marlon Nieves. Call is hitting .255 in limited at-bats this season and isn’t exactly a star, but he’s a right-handed hitter who can play all three outfield spots. He’d give Seattle a warm body who can contribute right away.

Davalan is the Dodgers’ No. 7 prospect according to MLB.com. He’s 22 years old, has real offensive upside, and isn’t projected to reach the majors until 2028. Nieves is a 19-year-old pitcher with a good fastball and slider but needs to refine his command. He’s a longer-term play.

Is that enough for Castillo? If he were pitching like an ace, no chance. But given his down year and the fact that he’s 33 with a big contract, this return feels about right. The Mariners would get an MLB-ready outfielder, a couple of lottery tickets, and some payroll flexibility. The Dodgers would add a proven starter without gutting their system.

Neither team has confirmed anything, of course. But the logic is there. The Dodgers don’t need to swing for the fences. They just need somebody who can eat innings and keep games close. Castillo has done that for years. And right now, he might be available for a price that won’t make Andrew Friedman wince.

Will this exact deal happen? Maybe not. But don’t be surprised if the Dodgers circle back to Castillo as the deadline approaches. Sometimes the best move isn’t the flashiest one. It’s the one that makes sense.
