Christian Eriksen’s playing future is back under a cloud. Again.
The 34-year-old Danish midfielder, who collapsed on the pitch during Euro 2020 after suffering a heart attack, had another incident last month. It happened during a Denmark friendly against Ukraine in Odense. The game was stopped in the 65th minute and abandoned shortly after. Eriksen walked off the field under his own power.
That part is key. He walked off. But the moment itself was enough to raise questions about whether he’d play again at a professional level.
Wolfsburg, the Bundesliga club he joined last year after three seasons at Manchester United, released a statement this week. The club confirmed Eriksen will begin an individual rehabilitation program. He’ll do it in his native Denmark after discussions with Wolfsburg managing director Dieter Hecking.
“VfL is in regular contact with Christian and his doctors. We wish Christian all the best for his continued rehabilitation,” the statement read.
Eriksen’s first comeback was remarkable. Less than a year after that Euro 2020 collapse, he was back playing for Brentford in the Premier League. He signed with Manchester United in July 2022 and made 64 appearances across all competitions for the club. His three-year stint at Old Trafford ended last summer when he moved to Wolfsburg on a free transfer.
Now the timeline is tighter. Wolfsburg opens its season on August 8 against FC Kaiserslautern. Nobody is saying whether Eriksen will be available. The club didn’t offer a timetable for his return. They just said he’ll rehab in Denmark and stay in contact.
The medical reality here is worth noting. Eriksen plays with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted after his 2021 heart attack. It’s essentially a pacemaker that monitors his heart and can deliver a shock if needed. Doctors cleared him to play with it. But having a second incident on the field has to raise conversations behind closed doors between the player, his family, and his medical team.
Eriksen has not made any public statements since the incident. His determination has never been the issue. He fought back once from something that would have ended most careers. But the body sometimes makes decisions for you.
Wolfsburg’s approach seems careful. Individual program. Back in Denmark for support. No rush. No promises. Just a plan to get him healthy and see what comes next.
