Manchester United Goes All In on Alex Scott After Back-to-Back Transfer Losses

Manchester United is tired of getting beat to the punch. After losing Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham and Elliot Anderson to Manchester City, the club has zeroed in on Bournemouth’s Alex Scott as its top midfield target. But prying him away from the south coast won’t be easy.

According to transfer insider Ben Jacobs, United is preparing to open formal talks for Scott, a 22-year-old who helped Bournemouth qualify for Europe for the first time in 127 years. The Cherries want him locked up, but Scott has reportedly turned down contract extension offers that would include a release clause — the same approach they used with Antoine Semenyo last year.

The Bournemouth Problem

Scott’s current deal runs through 2028, which gives Bournemouth plenty of leverage. The club has been clear: they don’t want this dragging into August. They want clarity before the season starts. But Scott’s rejection of their proposals has opened the door for suitors to believe a move is still possible.

Bournemouth is still talking to Scott’s camp. Fresh contact is expected next week. But the longer this goes, the more pressure builds on both sides.

United’s Urgency After Two Misses

United had Anderson lined up. Then City swooped in. Same story with Fernandes, except Tottenham was the hijacker. And just last night, they took another L on Aurelien Tchouameni. That sting is real. Now Scott is the guy they’ve decided they need to steady their midfield.

Reports suggest United is considering an £80 million offer to test Bournemouth’s resolve. Michael Carrick has given the green light. Scott is open to the move, but he also has options — Arsenal, Manchester City, even Chelsea might get involved.

Arsenal, City, and the Rest

Arsenal already had an inquiry knocked back last week. They’ve shifted focus to Bruno Guimaraes for now, but if Newcastle refuses to sell their captain, the Gunners could circle back. City has made a direct approach in recent weeks, and Pep Guardiola has called Scott an “unbelievable player” before. Jacobs says City, Arsenal, and United have shown the most aggression in pursuit.

Chelsea did their homework on Scott back in March but haven’t made contact recently. That could change fast. United just agreed to a £50 million deal for Andrey Santos, and Chelsea had reportedly planned to target Scott if Santos left. So don’t be surprised if a bid from Stamford Bridge shows up soon.

Liverpool and Tottenham are also admirers, but both are focused elsewhere for now. Liverpool just hired Andoni Iraola after his Bournemouth contract expired — the same coach who helped turn Scott into one of the league’s most complete midfielders. That connection is interesting, but Liverpool hasn’t made a move yet.

What Happens Next

Bournemouth wants this resolved quickly. United wants Scott badly. The player has options. The price tag is going to be steep. It’s a three-way chess match with a ticking clock, and the next week should tell us whether Scott stays on the south coast or becomes the centerpiece of someone else’s midfield rebuild.
