NBA Investigation Into Kawhi Leonard’s Deal Has No End Date, League Says

The NBA has no idea when its investigation into the Kawhi Leonard salary cap situation will wrap up. A league spokesperson told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Thursday that there is no specific timeline for the conclusion of the probe but that the firm handling it expects to finish in the coming weeks.

That “coming weeks” language is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. The investigation centers on whether the Los Angeles Clippers funneled money to Leonard through an endorsement deal with Aspiration, a now-bankrupt eco-friendly financial company. If the league finds the Clippers guilty of circumventing the salary cap, the penalties could be severe. Fines. Lost draft picks. Maybe even a voided contract or two.

The Kawhi Timeline Gets Messier

This whole thing has been hanging over the NBA since the summer of 2023, when reports first surfaced that Leonard’s camp had received payments from Aspiration that went beyond what a standard endorsement would look like. The company, which marketed itself as a sustainable banking alternative, collapsed in early 2024. That bankruptcy filing made it a lot harder for investigators to track the money trail. No records. No cooperation. Just a lot of silence.

Meanwhile, Leonard and the Toronto Raptors are trying to recreate the magic of their 2019 championship run. That full-circle storyline would be incredible for Canadian sports fans. But before anyone can even think about a second ring in Toronto, the league needs to decide whether the Clippers broke the rules to get him there in the first place. Leonard signed with the Clippers in 2019 as a free agent, right after he led the Raptors to the title. The timing has always been suspicious.

The NBA’s investigation is being conducted by an outside law firm, which is standard procedure for these kinds of cases. But there’s a reason the league won’t commit to a deadline. These things take forever. The league investigated the Dallas Mavericks for tanking back in 2018 and didn’t issue any punishment until 2020. The Los Angeles Lakers got dinged for tampering with Paul George in 2017, but the fine came down in 2019. The NBA moves at its own pace.

For now, the Clippers are operating as if nothing is wrong. Leonard is healthy and playing at an All-NBA level. Paul George is still in town. They’re contenders in the Western Conference. But if that investigation lands badly, the entire franchise could get blown up. That’s the part nobody is talking about out loud.

The league spokesperson didn’t offer any hints about potential outcomes. Just that the firm is working on it. Could be next week. Could be next season. Welcome to the NBA’s slow-motion version of justice.
