Voice Notes Are the New Recruiting Pitch for LeBron James. Seriously.

The NBA offseason is basically a 24/7 reality show, and this year’s plot twist is honestly kind of funny. Teams trying to land LeBron James are now sending voice notes to his agent, Rich Paul, like they’re pitching a podcast guest instead of a four-time MVP.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, multiple frontrunners for James — the Cavaliers, Heat, Warriors, Timberwolves, 76ers — have recorded audio messages from owners, presidents, or general managers. Those files get sent to Paul, who then forwards them to James. It’s a free agency strategy that sounds like something out of 2026 but it’s happening right now.

James informed the Lakers he’s leaving this summer, so the chase is on. His former teams in Cleveland and Miami are obviously in the mix. But the 76ers just traded for Jaylen Brown, which might’ve bumped them up the list. The Timberwolves view James as the final piece for a title run. Even Golden State is reportedly making calls.

None of this is exactly breaking news in terms of who’s interested. The weird part is the medium. A voice note feels personal and intimate, almost like a recruiting tactic for a college recruit — except LeBron is 40 and has been through this movie five times already.

Teams are desperate to stand out, I guess. You can’t send a text that says hey come play for us like it’s a DM to a random free agent. LeBron gets hundreds of those. But a recorded pitch from an owner? That’s different. That’s a guy saying I’m personally invested into a microphone and hitting send.

James is still a borderline top-10 player in the league. Wasn’t that long ago he was the clear best guy on the floor during a Lakers playoff series. He’s not what he was in his first Cleveland or Miami runs, but he’s still good enough to tilt a franchise’s trajectory.

No timeline on when he’ll decide. The Cavs and Heat feel like frontrunners based on history and vibes. Philly just made a splash. Minnesota thinks he’s the missing piece. Golden State’s always lurking.

For now, Rich Paul is basically a voice-mail inbox for half the league’s most powerful people. And LeBron’s listening.
