Pete Crow-Armstrong hit two home runs against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night, and that alone would have been a solid note in a 9-7 win. But the second homer pushed him into a piece of Cubs trivia that’s equal parts obscure and delightful.
He’s now taken bird teams deep in all three matchups this season. The Orioles, the Blue Jays, the Cardinals. All of them. He’s the fourth Cub ever to pull that off in a single season, according to the Marquee Sports Network. The last guy to do it? You’d have to dig pretty deep into the record books.
There’s something fitting about a guy whose last name is Crow doing damage against teams with feathers on their caps. Fans on social media had fun with that one. The timing works too. Crow-Armstrong is hitting .296 with 21 homers, 52 RBIs and 23 stolen bases entering Thursday. That’s a 20-20 season before the All-Star break, which is the kind of pace that gets people talking about something bigger than bird-based achievements.
More Than a Gimmick Stat
Look, the bird thing is funny. It’s a nice little footnote. But Crow-Armstrong is doing real damage this year. He leads the Cubs in batting average (among players with 10 or more games played), home runs and stolen bases. He’s second on the team in RBIs behind Dansby Swanson.
This isn’t a fluke. He hit .247 with 31 homers, 95 RBIs and 35 steals last season. He’s on pace to blow past all of those numbers in 2026. The Cubs have him locked into the middle of the lineup and there’s no reason to think that changes anytime soon.
What It Means For Chicago
The Cubs are relying on Crow-Armstrong whether the opposing mascot has wings or not. He’s become the kind of player who changes how a lineup looks. Pitchers have to think about his power, his speed, his ability to put the ball in play. That’s a headache for anyone, bird-themed or otherwise.
And if the opponent does happen to be a bird team? Well, Crow-Armstrong seems to have a little extra motivation. He’s ready to fly, as the saying goes. The Cubs will take that every time.
