Kawhi’s Game 7 Bounce is Now a Punchline After Raptors-Clippers Trade Freeze

Remember when Kawhi Leonard’s Game 7 shot against the Sixers bounced on the rim about nine times before dropping? That hesitation is basically a perfect metaphor for what’s happening with his trade now.

The NBA world found out this week that the Clippers and Raptors have put their massive Kawhi deal on ice. The reason? That Aspiration investigation has finally caught up to the situation, and Toronto isn’t exactly eager to absorb whatever penalties might come with it.

Toronto’s position is pretty straightforward. They were ready to bring Kawhi back for another title run, but apparently they learned that completing the trade would mean inheriting any fallout from the NBA’s investigation into whether the Clippers used the now-defunct company Aspiration to get around salary cap rules. The Raptors reportedly said no thanks to assuming that risk.

So naturally, social media did its thing. JE Skeets dropped the obvious joke on X: “Kawhi trade gonna bounce on the rim a few times.” Because of course it did. That’s basically the theme of Kawhi’s entire career at this point — nothing happens cleanly.

For those who need a refresher on why that shot still lives rent-free in everyone’s head: 2019 Eastern Conference Semifinals, Game 7, the ball hangs in the air forever, bounces four times, and finally falls through. The Raptors won the title that year. Fans in Toronto were hoping for a repeat when news broke that the team was trying to bring Kawhi back. Now they’re stuck waiting.

What the Aspiration Investigation Actually Means

Sports journalist Pablo Torre first reported that the NBA had been quietly looking into whether Leonard and the Clippers used Aspiration — a company that’s no longer in business — to basically hide money and get around the salary cap. This isn’t some minor procedural thing either. The league has precedent for handing out serious punishments for this kind of stuff, including suspensions and losing draft picks.

It’s not hard to see why Toronto would pump the brakes. Taking on Kawhi’s contract is one thing. Taking on a potential penalty package from the league is another thing entirely.

As of now, there’s no timeline on when the NBA will wrap up its investigation. The trade sits in limbo. And Kawhi, who might be the most stoic superstar in league history, is presumably just waiting it out somewhere quiet.

The Raptors fans who were already planning the parade route might want to hold off on those reservations.
