Kawhi Leonard’s Contract Could Get Voided and That Changes Everything About the Clippers Raptors Trade

An NBA insider is raising the possibility that Kawhi Leonard’s contract could be voided entirely. That would do more than just tank the trade that sent him from the Clippers to the Raptors last week. It would reshape the league’s financial landscape and put a cloud over every deal that involved the Clippers’ ownership group.

Howard Beck joined the conversation on Bluesky after news broke that the Leonard trade was on hold pending the NBA’s investigation into the Clippers’ relationship with Aspiration, a financial technology company. Beck didn’t hold back.

“Two immediate thoughts: 1. You’d think they would have consulted the league office before agreeing to the deal. 2. Though I don’t want to jump to conclusions, this certainly leaves open the possibility that Kawhi’s contract gets voided (which would sorta ruin the trade).”

The League’s Probe Goes Beyond One Trade

The NBA is looking into whether the Clippers used a massive sponsorship deal with Aspiration to get around the salary cap. According to reporting from journalist Pablo Torre, internal documents suggest owner Steve Ballmer invested $50 million into Aspiration through his personal LLC in September 2021. That same month, the Clippers signed a reported $300 million sponsorship agreement with the company.

But the questions didn’t stop there. Additional reporting alleged that Leonard himself received a $28 million endorsement deal through Aspiration. Investigators are looking at that too.

The Clippers have denied everything. In a statement Thursday, the organization said it “did not funnel money to Kawhi Leonard through Aspiration” and said it expects the investigation to clear the franchise.

What Happens to Kawhi’s Contract

Beck expanded on his initial thought later in the thread. He acknowledged a suspension is possible but argued the bigger concern is Leonard’s contract getting wiped out.

“A suspension is also possible, of course. But, depending on length, the Raptors probably navigate that. (He’s going to miss 25-30 games on health, anyway.) I think the threat of a voided contract is the greater concern here.”

If that happened, Leonard would become a free agent. The Raptors would lose the centerpiece of the return package they sent to the Clippers. The whole deal would collapse, and both teams would have to start over.

For now, the Clippers confirmed the trade can’t be finalized until the NBA completes its investigation. The Raptors’ ownership group would have to assume the risk of any penalties tied to Leonard’s contract. Until then, everyone is stuck waiting.

And that uncertainty is the real trouble. The NBA’s investigation could stretch on for weeks, maybe longer. In the meantime, both teams are operating without knowing what their rosters will look like next season.
