The Washington Commanders have a quarterback who can make magic happen. Jayden Daniels proved that in 2024. But the roster around him? That’s where things get dicey.
Look at the receiver room. It’s thinner than it was two years ago. Back then, Daniels had Terry McLaurin and Zach Ertz as his primary targets. And that worked — 25 touchdowns, a trip to the NFC Championship Game. But Ertz is gone. And the guys behind McLaurin now? Luke McCaffrey is currently the WR2. Rookie Antonio Williams is WR3. That’s a lot of pressure on a third-round pick and a guy who caught 12 passes last season.
The Commanders did not win 12 games in 2024 because their receiving corps was deep. They won because Daniels played absurdly well in clutch moments. He made something out of nothing again and again. The problem with relying on that? It’s not sustainable. Especially when defenses know you don’t have anyone else to throw to.
ESPN’s Ben Solak wrote that Williams could win Offensive Rookie of the Year. He made the case that Williams has a clear path to targets and that his game resembles Amon-Ra St. Brown’s. That’s a best-case scenario. But eight receivers were drafted before Williams. For him to be the best rookie in the class? That’s asking a lot. And it would require first-year offensive coordinator David Blough to be something close to a prodigy right out of the gate. That’s a gamble.
The offense has other problems too
It’s not just the receivers. The running game is a committee approach that looks shaky. There’s a question mark at center on the offensive line. The only real way this offense hits high gear is if the receivers create separation on deep routes. McLaurin will draw double teams. After that? Dyami Brown has five career touchdowns in five seasons. He’s never caught more than 30 passes. Counting on him to stretch the field feels like wishful thinking.
The other option is play-action. If Blough can use Daniels’ mobility to open up downfield shots, that could work. But who’s catching those balls? The Commanders have waited on Stefon Diggs. They’ve been linked to Brandon Aiyuk. Neither move has materialized. At this point, the roster is what it is.
This team looks more like a 5-12 squad than a 12-5 one. The magic from 2024 is fading. And unless someone surprises everyone, the receiver room is going to be the reason why.
