Madison Square Garden has a problem with some of its most famous guests. And apparently, the arena has been keeping score.
Pablo Torre, a sports reporter who clearly got his hands on some fascinating internal documents, revealed this week that MSG maintains a detailed database of celebrity visitors. And yes, it assigns them a “risk score.” The system tracks roughly 39,540 entries of high-profile people from business, tech, politics, media, and sports. Plus their guests.
The report comes from Torre’s show and was first detailed by Wired. It paints a picture of a venue that is less interested in who you are and more interested in what you might do. Or what you might tweet.
Some of the names on the list include Selena Gomez, Ice Spice, Michael Strahan, and a handful of others who attended Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding at the Garden on July 3. That wedding itself was a massive event. But the overlap between wedding guests and the people MSG is tracking is what makes this story wild.
How the Score Works
The database assigns different tiers of “risk” to celebrities. According to Torre, the rating takes into account public comments about team owner James Dolan. If you have posted something critical about Dolan on social media, that can apparently bump your score up. The arena also keeps an eye on general behavior during games and events.
It’s not clear exactly what happens when a celebrity gets flagged as high risk. Maybe they get worse seats. Maybe security watches them closer. Maybe they just don’t get invited back. The Garden hasn’t confirmed the details, and the team hasn’t commented publicly on the report.
But the implication is obvious. MSG wants to control the narrative. They want the crowd to be full of people who are pro-owner, pro-team, and pro-vibe. Anyone who might complicate that image gets a note in the system.
That’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work for a building that is supposed to be about the game itself.
The Knicks Are the Hot Ticket Now
Of course, all of this comes at a moment when the Knicks are as popular as they have been in decades. They just won the NBA championship, beating the San Antonio Spurs in the Finals. The two home games during that series were packed with celebrities, Swift included. The energy in the building was electric. And now, with a title under their belt, tickets are going to be even harder to get next season.
So if you are a celebrity hoping to catch a game courtside, maybe keep the Dolan tweets to yourself. At least until the database gets an update.
