Red Sox Called About Corey Seager Last Winter. Now the Rangers Have a Big Choice to Make.

The Boston Red Sox look like a different team than the one that stumbled out of the gate in April. But their front office might still be looking for a big move to keep that momentum going. And according to a new report from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon, the name that keeps circling back is Corey Seager.

The Rangers shortstop is currently hurt. Again. But teams are apparently still curious. Multiple clubs asked Texas about Seager last offseason, and the Red Sox were among them. That interest didn’t go away just because the season started. Now with the trade deadline less than a month away, it’s worth asking: could this actually happen?

The Rangers aren’t looking to sell. Yet.

Texas wants to get Seager healthy and make a real push for the AL West. They’re hovering around .500 and Semien is gone. That trade changed the math for a lot of front offices. Suddenly the Rangers looked less like a team building for October and more like one that might be willing to listen.

According to the report, the Rangers told teams last winter they’d need to be “overwhelmed” to part with Seager. That hasn’t changed. But if they sputter in the next few weeks, internal conversations will shift. And Boston might be the team with the most to gain.

What Boston has left to offer

The Red Sox emptied a lot of their prospect capital to land Garrett Crochet before the 2025 season. That deal cost them. Their farm system isn’t as deep as it used to be. But three names keep coming up: Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell, and Roman Anthony. All three were supposed to be the next wave in Boston. All three have had underwhelming seasons so far.

Mayer has dealt with injuries again. Campbell hasn’t hit like anyone expected. Anthony has been inconsistent. Their trade value might never be higher than it is right now, based on name recognition and draft pedigree. If Texas asks for one of them in a Seager deal, Craig Breslow has to at least think about it.

And honestly? He might have to say yes.

Breslow was on the hottest seat in baseball after that brutal start. The Red Sox were a disaster. Thirteen games under .500 at one point. The fact that they’ve clawed back to respectability is a credit to the players, but the front office still needs to show ownership it has a plan. Trading for Seager would be a statement. It would also be a lifeline for Breslow’s job security.

The clock is ticking

The trade deadline is August 3. That’s not a lot of time for the Rangers to figure out what they are. If they go on a run, Seager stays and they ride it out. If they keep spinning their wheels, the calls from Boston will get louder.

Seager is under contract for years. He’s not a rental. That makes the price higher but also makes the deal more logical for both sides if the Rangers decide to reload rather than retool. The Red Sox have young talent that could help Texas rebuild. And Texas has a star who could help Boston win now.

It’s one of those rumors that feels too big to happen. Until it does.
