Aiyuk’s Social Media Meltdown Has a Veteran Reporter Telling Him to Log Off

Brandon Aiyuk keeps posting, and one NFL reporter has seen enough.

Vincent Bonsignore of the California Post didn’t hold back when he went after the 49ers wide receiver for his ongoing social media behavior. Aiyuk has spent the summer airing grievances online, including posts that suggest he wants to play for the Washington Commanders. The problem? He’s still under contract with San Francisco.

“Brandon Aiyuk, it’s time to put your phone down, buddy. Your act has grown stale, if not cringey,” Bonsignore wrote. He didn’t stop there. “Whatever salient message you’ve tried to deliver through a series of social media posts has been lost in the creepiness of it all. That includes Tuesday’s post in which you insist you will not take the necessary steps to seek reinstatement from the 49ers. That means you will continue to remain in career limbo for reasons only you can explain.”

That’s a blunt assessment from a guy who covers the league. But the situation is genuinely messy, and it’s not just about hurt feelings on Twitter.

The Contract Problem Nobody Is Talking About

Here’s what a lot of fans might not realize. Aiyuk skipped the rehab program the 49ers laid out for his knee injury. That decision voided the guarantees in his contract. He played only seven games in 2024 before the knee gave out, and he didn’t take a single snap in 2025. So the team holds all the leverage right now, not him.

Bonsignore laid out the obvious path forward. “Sit down with Lynch and Shanahan and convince them you are ready to move forward. Seek reinstatement. If it’s granted, report to training camp and show everyone the knee is good to go.”

It’s simple advice. But Aiyuk seems determined to make this as complicated as possible.

What Happens If He Does Everything Right?

Even if Aiyuk swallows his pride, does the rehab, and shows up ready to play, there’s no guarantee the 49ers want him back. The relationship has soured. The Commanders don’t appear to be lining up to trade for him either, at least not right now. Aiyuk had an incredible start to his career in San Francisco, but the last two years have been a headache for everyone involved.

So the real question isn’t whether he can tweet his way out of this. It’s whether he can get back on the field at all. And right now, the answer isn’t clear.
