Michael Kay admitted he got it wrong. The YES Network broadcaster said Wednesday that he was mistaken about a rumor involving Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe and second base. And he plans to apologize directly to Volpe.
The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner posted Kay’s response on X (formerly Twitter) with a blunt quote: “I was wrong.” Kay added that he would address it with the infielder himself.
This matters because of what the rumor implied. The claim was that Volpe refused to take work at second base while he was in the minors. That’s a damaging accusation in any clubhouse, but especially in New York, where a story about a player rejecting a team request can shift focus from his performance to his character overnight.
The Yankees pushed back hard. They denied the account, and Kay walked it back. The whole thing flipped from a positional debate into a public correction in less than 24 hours.
Volpe is already under a microscope. He’s 25, the Yankees are trying to figure out their infield, and his defense and playing time have been topics of conversation all spring. That’s a lot of noise for a young player still trying to lock down a role. The last thing he needed was a rumor that questioned his willingness to do what the team asked.
So Kay’s reversal was significant. It didn’t just clear the air, it stopped a story that could have spiraled into something bigger. The Yankees defended their guy. Kay admitted fault. And Volpe gets to go back to worrying about baseball instead of damage control.
But the bigger question lingers
This doesn’t solve the infield puzzle. The Yankees still have to decide where Volpe fits long term. Shortstop stability, second base options, lineup construction — all of that is still on the table. One corrected rumor doesn’t change the roster math.
What it does is remove one unnecessary distraction. A story about refusal and attitude can follow a player if it isn’t addressed quickly. Kay’s admission took the air out of that balloon before it inflated further.
For now, the focus shifts back to what Volpe does on the field. And that’s exactly where the Yankees want it.
