Tom Brady stopped by the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce this week and did something fans don’t get to see often anymore. He dropped into a dead-on impression of Rob Gronkowski, complete with that goofy voice and the same energy Gronk brought to every room he ever walked into.
The story behind it is the real payoff though. Brady recalled a moment early in their Patriots run when Gronk showed up to a team meeting looking completely clueless about the playbook. Not in a lazy way. More like he had just wandered in off the street and someone handed him a laminated sheet in a foreign language. Brady said Gronk just sat there nodding along with this blank stare, and when the coach asked if he had any questions, Gronk goes “Nope. Got it.” Then he proceeded to run the wrong route on the very first rep of practice.
It’s funny now because Gronk obviously figured it out. The two of them went on to become arguably the most lethal quarterback-tight end combo the league has ever seen. Four Super Bowls together. Hall of Fame resumes for both. But that early moment of pure confusion sums up Gronk’s whole deal. The guy could look completely lost one second and then go catch a 40-yard touchdown the next.
Brady’s impression was the highlight of the episode for a lot of fans watching at home. Social media lit up with people asking for a full segment of Brady just doing Gronk impressions. Kelce brothers included. Travis was laughing so hard he had to take his headphones off for a second.
What This Means for the Current Patriots
The Patriots are still trying to rebuild that kind of chemistry with Drake Maye under center. Maye finished second in NFL MVP voting last season, which is absurd for a second-year quarterback on a team that didn’t even make the Super Bowl. But the weapons around him are finally starting to take shape.
New England signed Romeo Doubs away from Green Bay in free agency. Then they pulled off a monster trade to bring in AJ Brown from Philadelphia. That’s two legit wide receivers who can actually separate and catch contested balls. Brown in particular is the kind of alpha receiver the Patriots haven’t had since Randy Moss was in town.
Nobody is saying Maye and Brown are going to be the next Brady and Gronk. That’s an impossible bar. But the Patriots have quietly put together a roster that looks dangerous. They open the 2026 season with a road game against Seattle. Which is also a Super Bowl rematch from last year. So the stakes are high right out of the gate.
As for Brady and Gronk, they’re both retired now. But stories like this one are a good reminder that even the greatest players started out looking lost in a meeting room. The difference is they got better. Way better.
