Tom Brady Shuts Down the ‘Who Was More Important’ Debate With Bill Belichick Once and For All

Tom Brady finally addressed the oldest argument in NFL history and he didn’t leave much room for interpretation. He called it dumb.

Sitting down with Travis and Jason Kelce on the latest episode of the “New Heights” podcast, the seven-time Super Bowl champion made it clear that the endless debate over whether he or Bill Belichick deserved more credit for the Patriots dynasty was never a real question to begin with. At least not in his mind.

“It’s just a dumb analogy,” Brady said flatly. “There’s nobody more important to winning, Monday through Saturday, than the head coach. And there’s nobody more important on Sunday than the quarterback.”

Brady and Belichick won six Super Bowls together in New England over nearly two decades. Fans and analysts spent most of that time picking sides. Brady says that was missing the point the whole time.

Why Brady says both sides were always wrong

He didn’t just shrug off the debate. He broke it down. Brady credited Belichick for making sure the team was prepared every single week, calling him the best in the business at getting a roster ready to win. But he also acknowledged a hard truth about football.

“If you have bad quarterback play, it doesn’t matter what else you do,” Brady said. “You’re not gonna win. And if you have bad coaching, it doesn’t matter how well the players are doing, you’re gonna lose.”

He called it a privilege to play for Belichick and said he couldn’t have become the player he was without him. But he also pushed back on the idea that either man could have done it alone. They pushed each other, he said, and that’s what made it work.

Where both men are now

Brady is retired now, calling games for Fox on Sundays and generally enjoying life away from the field. Belichick is still coaching, getting ready for his third season at North Carolina. The Tar Heels have had mixed results so far, but Belichick’s track record speaks for itself.

The old debate will probably never fully die. But at least one of the two men involved has officially closed the door on it.
