Brandon Aiyuk’s Self-Imposed Exile Is Burning Every Bridge He Has Left

Brandon Aiyuk’s Self-Imposed Exile Is Burning Every Bridge He Has Left

The Brandon Aiyuk situation has somehow gotten weirder and more self-destructive. The former 49ers receiver, who hasn’t played a down since tearing up his knee in 2024, is now apparently trolling Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels on social media. And this is happening while Aiyuk remains in a bizarre limbo on San Francisco’s left squad list, collecting zero game checks and refusing to engage with anyone in a position to help him.

David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard put it bluntly: Aiyuk has spent so much time burning bridges with the 49ers that he’s now torching his relationship with Washington before he even gets there. And at this point, it’s fair to wonder if he ever actually wants to play football again.

The 49ers Have Moved On. Aiyuk Hasn’t.

San Francisco placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad designation after he made it clear he would not play for the organization again. That was months ago. Since then, the 49ers have built their offense around other options and effectively established all the leverage in this standoff. Aiyuk, meanwhile, has refused to file the paperwork required to either return to the active roster or secure a standard release. He’s just… sitting there. Unpaid. Uncooperative. Untradeable in any practical sense.

Lombardi argued that the delay has become pointless. The 49ers held onto Aiyuk long enough for him to alienate everyone in their building. Now he’s taking shots at Daniels, a guy who was reportedly a friend. If San Francisco finally releases him and Washington says no thanks, Aiyuk basically vanishes as an NFL player and becomes a full-time internet troll.

And honestly? That might be what he wants.

Washington’s Receiver Room Is Thin but Maybe Not That Desperate

The Commanders clearly need help at wideout. They drafted some rookies, but the depth chart behind Terry McLaurin is shaky. Aiyuk was a legitimate number-two option before the injury, but asking a guy who hasn’t played in two years to learn a new offense is a gamble with terrible odds. Stefon Diggs is out there as a free agent. There are other moves to make.

Washington has not indicated whether they’d still pursue Aiyuk if he became available. But the social media stuff toward Daniels can’t help. Neither can the fact that Aiyuk has shown zero interest in doing the basic administrative work needed to get back on a field.

At some point, teams stop treating you like a distressed asset and start treating you like a headache. Aiyuk is getting close to that line, if he hasn’t already crossed it.
