Liverpool has reportedly reached out about signing Gilberto Mora. The 17-year-old Mexican midfielder already played in a World Cup this summer. That’s not something you see every day.
Mora made four appearances for co-host Mexico during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making him the youngest player called up to the tournament. He’s already won 12 senior caps for El Tri and helped them win the 2025 Gold Cup. At 15 years and 320 days old, he became the youngest player ever to score in Liga MX. He also holds the record as the youngest player to win a senior international tournament.
According to Mexican outlet El Universal, Liverpool made an initial approach to try and land Mora from Club Tijuana. Arsenal is reportedly ready to jump into the race too. The Gunners have been keeping an eye on the kid for a while, but Liverpool’s move might push things forward.
This isn’t the first time Mora has drawn interest from bigger clubs. Club Tijuana has already turned down offers from teams in Europe, MLS and Brazil. Real Madrid has been tracking him for years. But none of those suitors can actually sign him yet.
Under FIFA rules, Mora can’t join a foreign senior team until he turns 18 in October. So any deal would have to wait until then. That gives the teenager a few more months to develop and gives these clubs more time to sort out their plans.
What makes Mora special? He’s a technical midfielder with good vision and composure way beyond his years. Playing in a World Cup at 17, even in a limited role, tells you something about his mentality. Mexico hasn’t produced a prospect this hyped in a long time.
Club Tijuana knows what they’ve got. They’re not rushing to sell. But with Liverpool, Arsenal and Real Madrid all in the mix, the pressure is going to build. October feels like it could get a little chaotic.
