Baker Mayfield Might Bolt Tampa Bay Over Respect, Not Dollars, Florio Warns

Baker Mayfield Might Bolt Tampa Bay Over Respect, Not Dollars, Florio Warns

The Buccaneers have a problem, and it might not be about the money.

Contract talks between Tampa Bay and Baker Mayfield have turned into one of those standoffs where both sides think they’re holding the better hand. The quarterback set a July 28 deadline for extension negotiations, and the team seems content to let him play out his current deal and see what the open market says he’s worth. But Mike Florio thinks the Bucs are playing with fire.

On PFT Live, the longtime NFL insider laid out a scenario that should make Tampa Bay nervous. He suggested that Mayfield, who has spent his whole career being doubted and shipped around, might not just chase the highest number. He might chase respect instead.

“Come March of 2027, Baker Mayfield may take less from another team just to stick it to the Buccaneers for not doing the right thing,” Florio said.

The Respect Factor

Florio’s argument is pretty simple. The Bucs are betting that nobody will offer Mayfield more than they will, so they can drag things out and get him at their price. But that assumes every player makes decisions like a robot running a spreadsheet. Mayfield has a history of playing with a chip on his shoulder, and he’s been pretty open about wanting to feel valued.

Sure, Florida’s lack of state income tax is a real advantage in negotiations. That’s a concrete financial edge. But Florio believes emotions and trust can override tax brackets. If Mayfield feels like Tampa Bay dragged him through the mud, he might take a slightly smaller offer somewhere else just to prove the point.

He’s Not the Same Quarterback They Signed in 2023

Remember, Mayfield showed up in Tampa Bay on a prove-it deal after getting cut by Carolina and bounced through LA. He wasn’t a hot commodity then. He was a reclamation project. Now he’s coming off consecutive Pro Bowl seasons in 2023 and 2024, and he’s basically been the guy who kept the post-Brady ship from sinking. The franchise has gone from “can he even start?” to “we can’t afford to lose him” in two years.

His whole career arc matters here. First overall pick in 2018. Ended Cleveland’s playoff drought. Then a brutal 2022 where he looked lost. Brief stops in Carolina and with the Rams. He rebuilt himself in Tampa. That kind of track record tends to make a person value loyalty and respect over squeezing every last dollar out of a negotiation.

The Bucs apparently believe nobody else will step up with a monster offer. That might be true. But Florio’s point is that Mayfield could still walk for less than Tampa Bay is willing to pay, just to send a message. Training camp is right around the corner. The clock is ticking. And this thing is not resolved yet.
