Warriors Let Quinten Post Walk to Memphis and LeBron James Is the Reason Why

The Memphis Grizzlies are adding another big man to their frontcourt, and this time they’re getting him straight from the Golden State Warriors’ bench. Quinten Post, a 7-foot Dutch center who gave the Dubs solid minutes during last season’s injury chaos, is heading to Memphis after Golden State declined to match a three-year, $30 million offer sheet. The news broke via ESPN’s Shams Charania, and it didn’t take long for Memphis to officially bring him in.

Post was a second-round pick in 2024 and actually shot 36.4 percent from three for his career, which is solid for a guy his size. Last season the numbers dipped a bit from deep, but the Grizzlies see him as a floor-stretching relief piece. They’re not asking him to be a star. They just need someone who can space the floor and eat minutes when injuries pile up — and with Memphis’s luck, that’s a real job requirement.

The Grizzlies have been rebuilding their frontcourt all summer. They added rookie Cameron Boozer, two-time Wooden Award winner Zach Edey, veteran enforcer Isaiah Stewart, and forward Jerami Grant. Post slides into that rotation as a guy who can step out and hit a three, which helps keep the paint open for drivers like Ja Morant — assuming Morant is still part of the long-term plan. Memphis officially moved on from the Morant era back in June, but they’re still figuring out what the next version of this team looks like.

Why the Warriors Let Him Go

Golden State thought about matching the offer sheet. According to ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel, the Warriors kicked around the idea of keeping Post as a trade asset worth $9 to $10 million. But in the end, they passed. The reason? LeBron James.

Siegel reported on X that the Warriors wanted to maintain financial flexibility, with LeBron as the primary focus. They didn’t want to tie themselves down with Post’s contract when they could keep the cap space open for a potential move for the Lakers star. It’s not a secret. Golden State has been chasing LeBron for months, and they’re not about to let a backup center get in the way of that pipe dream.

But let’s be real here. LeBron turning down a trade to the Warriors is basically a given at this point. He’s made it clear he wants to stay in L.A., and the Lakers aren’t exactly shopping him. Still, the Warriors are holding out hope, and that hope is worth more to them than a 7-foot Dutch shooter who averaged 7.6 points in 16 minutes last season.

For Memphis, this is a low-risk bet. Post doesn’t have to be a game-changer. He just has to be available, hit some threes, and not get bullied in the paint. The Grizzlies are still under construction. It might be a while before the final product is ready, but adding a guy who can stretch the floor without demanding the ball is never a bad move. And in a Western Conference that keeps getting deeper, every little bit helps.
