Picking an All-Time 20-0 Steelers Roster Is Harder Than It Looks

Picking an All-Time 20-0 Steelers Roster Is Harder Than It Looks

The internet has been buzzing with a new offseason game: build an undefeated team using only players from a single franchise. It started with the NBA, then the NFL, and now we’re picking through the Steelers’ history to see if we can piece together a perfect 20-0 squad.

Pittsburgh is one of those rare franchises where you could argue five different lineups and still leave out Hall of Famers. That’s the kind of problem you want. The Steelers haven’t been in Super Bowl contention lately, but they’ve had enough legends wear black and gold to make this exercise genuinely tough.

Let’s get into it.

Offense: The Easy Calls and the Painful Cuts

Quarterback was the first real fight. Terry Bradshaw gets the nod over Ben Roethlisberger, and it’s closer than you’d think. Bradshaw has four rings and an MVP. Big Ben has the volume stats but never made an All-Pro team. That’s the difference.

Franco Harris at running back is automatic. The Immaculate Reception alone seals it, but he’s also the franchise’s all-time rushing leader. At receiver, you’ve got John Stallworth and Hines Ward as the locks. Stallworth was the quiet star of those 70s teams, and Ward was the soul of the 2000s. The third spot goes to Antonio Brown. Leaving off Lynn Swann hurts. But Brown’s prime was unreal — six of the top nine reception seasons in team history, the top four receiving yard seasons, three of the top four touchdown seasons. The off-field stuff doesn’t change what he did on the field.

Heath Miller is the tight end. Easy call. He’s the safety blanket who ranks top five in every major receiving category for the franchise.

The offensive line is where things get weird. John Kolb and Tunch Ilkin at tackle. Alan Faneca and Ramon Foster at guard. Mike Webster at center. Foster never made a Pro Bowl, but he started 145 games in 11 seasons. That’s the kind of durability you need. Webster over Dermontti Dawson is another tough cut, but Webster’s four rings and six All-Pros tip the scale.

Defense: Where the Legends Live

Edge rusher is T.J. Watt and James Harrison. Watt is already the franchise sack leader by a mile with 115, and he has a Defensive Player of the Year award. Harrison has the 100-yard pick-six in Super Bowl XLIII and a DPOY of his own. That’s a nightmare for any offensive tackle.

Defensive tackle is Mean Joe Greene and Cam Heyward. Greene is one of the best to ever play the position. Heyward has been the modern anchor, trailing only Watt on the all-time sack list.

Linebacker is Jack Lambert and Jack Ham. Two Hall of Famers, six combined Super Bowl rings, and both played on the most feared defenses of the 1970s. That’s not a debate, that’s a statement.

Cornerback is Mel Blount and Rod Woodson. Blount has the franchise interception record with 57. Woodson has the NFL record for pick-sixes and five First Team All-Pros in Pittsburgh. Dwayne Woodruff gets the slot spot — 37 career picks, an interception in every season he played.

The safeties are Minkah Fitzpatrick and Troy Polamalu. Polamalu is iconic — two rings, a DPOY, and that hair. Fitzpatrick is the hot take here, but three First Team All-Pros in six seasons and an NFL-leading six picks in 2022 make the case for him.

Special Teams: Kicking and Punting

Chris Boswell over Gary Anderson at kicker. Boswell is 52-of-63 from 50-plus yards and has the sixth-highest field goal percentage in NFL history. He earned a First Team All-Pro in 2024. At punter, Bobby Walden is the franchise leader in punts and yards. Reliable for a decade.

This roster leaves out some genuine legends. That’s the point. Any 20-0 team from a franchise this deep is going to hurt somewhere. But if you’re building for one perfect season, this is a hell of a starting point.
